I have actually never hunted a deer using a shotgun, so I am ignorant when it comes to
purchasing big game ammo.( I only Bowhunt and occasionally rifle hunt) I have a very productive bow stand that I see deer out of every
hunt. I want to put my fiancee on a deer, and
I figure she can blast one with a shotgun.
Longest shot would be 35 yards.

12 gauge 3inch winchester SX3 is the weapon.

My question is, at that range what would yall suggest. 000BUCKSHOT 00BUCKSHOT 0 BUCKSHOT
or Slug?

Also what would you consider to be a conservative longest effective range for each of these loads?

Also what kind of blood trail would one expect with a well placed shot? ( shoulder or behind shoulder? etc...)

TIA

The more "0" on buckshot the bigger the pellets. Therefor 000 buck will have fewer pellets than
0 buckshot. More pellets should mean better pattern with less chances to miss. Any will do the job at 30 yards. If the buckshot passes through you will be able to bloodtrail. If it doesn't the trailing will be more difficult. I would wait for an opportunity for a shot 30 yds or closer. A decent shot with buckshot at that range and there shouldn't be much need for trailing

I prefer slugs....you won't have to worry about the deer going far at all.

Buckshot is good if the deer you are hunting are always moving and not really giving you a still shot. If you shot a deer standing still with buckshot at 30 yards be ready to have your GF witness smothing pretty gory... You will probably lose whatever it is she hits...the shoulder the neck...you run a high chance of hitting the gut...

my Grandfather swears by #1 Buckshot. And he has killed many moving deer with a shotgun.

00 should do the job. At 30yds you should be able to break both shoulders with a broad side shot.

I think you can still remove the plug when deer hunting.

As a long time dog hunter in the swamps, I prefer 00. I've killed with 000, but you get a few more pellets with 00. 30 yards and in is ideal range, but a well placed shot should knock em down up to 70 yards.

Back in my childhood days of chasing dogs and slinging gravel around the pine thickets of Northern Morehouse parish, I usually opted for a slug in the barrel and two 00's in the hole. This was papaw's setup of choice. His logic was the first shot they were gonna be standin still or running slow, best to pop em with the "bear ball". The two 00's were for the other deer that took off running after you poleaxed the first one. Damn effective strategy.

I hunt with a shotgun on my bowstand once gun season opens. I shoot a 10 gauge 3.5 inch 00 Buck. Nonetheless, at 30 yards, a 12 or 20 gauge 2 3/4 inch shell is more than enough. That should drop it in its tracks.

Also, I aim for a neck shot. Saves shoulder meat and seems to be deadly as shite...
