Fox pen clubs buy them. Fox pens are generally a several hundred acre hunting club (high fenced to keep the coyotes and foxes in).
People pay a daily fee or join the club. And then turn the dogs loose and listen to the chase.
Edit: Trapping has always intrigued me, but never got into it. So,I am also highly interested in your trapping knowledge as well. Thanks for the info...

I use to trap back in the early 1980's when Coon pells were bringing in $27-$28 for a #1. Back then I was making $350 a day and night hunting them suckers till the bottom fell out. What are the prices going for #1 coon pells now?
I still have at least 75 pan traps. My son has been thinking of getting into it again. Been years sence he traped. I used to drag his young arse out with me. He loved it till one night a coon climb up his leg after shooting it out a tree. Dam dogs were on his arse too! Man, did I laugh.
To this day, we both still laugh about that night.

shite, when we quit we were getting 2.50 for coon and 15 for fox. At least that what my uncle was telling us.......

Offshore, pardon my ignorance as well, but how are you going to go about getting a live coyote out of a leg hold trap?
Posted on 2/8/11 at 8:35 am to Jed Zeppelin
That's what I'm wondering. I wouldn't mess with a live one

You get him out with a pole that has a loop at one end. The rope goes to the opposite end and you pull it tight around his neck. Alot of times they will sull (sp). I used to run coyotes with hounds.

The last two posts made me lol.
I remember when I was about 10-11 years old and my uncle handed me a hammer handle to get "critters" out of traps. Picture a 10 year old with a 12" "club" and a 10-15 lb boar coon in a trap who's mad as two mfrs.
We used catch poles if we wanted something alive. A piece of PVC with a rope through it. Picture the snares that dog catchers use.

Infidel, I had a buddy back home that used to trap. He used a baseball bat on them to keep from damaging the hides. In that part of the country, we used a long chain with a home-made hook on the end. It would get hung on a mesquite bush and you would go in for the kill with the bat. He followed the drag marks to a bush. Looked like the coyote was wrapped up pretty tight. He went in like in like Babe Ruth, the coyote had more slack than he thought, He turned around and rushed out, but the coyote bit him on the arse. His dad was a dentist so he administered the rabies shots.

We used to use drag poles. Same idea. 5' sapling lying with 2 traps tied to it and bait tied to a stake between them.

It's great to see someone else trapping on this board. I'm not gonna get to do as much this year as years past because it's been rough around the ponderosa this year. I'm looking forward to the updates. I'm probably gonna set some beaver/otter/coon traps out behind the house. My boys love it.

Well I caught nothing today but I did have a pull out and had coyotes circle one of my cat sets. Coyotes don't like to commit to a set that is guided the way I make my cats sets.
I set 20 more and saw lots of sign so maybe the weather won't bother me too much.
To answer a few of the questions. Coyotes are big pussys when you get real close to them. I have only had two that tried to get me. I use a 4' catch pole to hold them down and use my feet to open the trap. Now they will bite you if you give them a chance.
You should see a big mean bobcat when you try to get that loop around their neck. No I don't sell then live I choke them to kill them. They die very quickly

so your yote set is unguided except for the log which at least makes them choose a side to come in on-- and if they follow the scent properly they will come in from the trap side because thats where it is exposed.
but what kind of guide are you making for the cats? are you puting sticks in the ground to make a "V" shape that they must enter?
do you use any kind of guide for the foxes or is it just like the yote set?
sorry if you answered this already but i cruised this great thread and didnt see it. i would love to see a pic of the cat set or a description!
i trapped a lot of coon otter and mink in highschool before reagan defeated the russians and the bottom fell out of fur prices. i tried for fox and cats but never was good at it, which is why i love this thread.

If you saw my cat set you would think some 12yr old kid was out setting traps. I make a walk through with sticks and small logs. I place stepping sticks in front of the trap so the cat will step over and on to my pan. Cats are not scared of anything and it doesn't bother them one bit. But they don't like to back out so that's why I use a walk through. They are really pretty dumb but like any cat they are finicky and may or may not commit to your set. They also seem to me very lucky. I can't tell you how many time I have had cats step right beside the pan and not get caught.
Grey fox you can guide but not Reds. Reds you have to set like coyotes.
With cats and greys guide your set so they have no where to step but on your pan. Some of the trappers out west don't even cover their traps for cats they leave the pan exposed to give them a place to step.
I was gonna take pictures today but I took my card out of my phone and left it in the truck. I will get some for you.

Back in the day, circa 1964, my uncle would take me trapping. He was a timber grader by trade but he made more money running his trap line.
There was a fur buyer from Bayle's in West Monroe who would come by every other Tuesday. I remember Bobcat's going for $60.00 a pelt.
Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

If you were still getting that kind of money I would get back into it. WOuldn't take long to make a nice little hinting fund while having a damn good time.

I would too. My Uncle Roy burned no daylight and taught me to be a woodsman. I miss him.

cool thread....can you trap year round ? what if you get something you are not supposed to get, like a deer out of season ?
Posted on 2/8/11 at 11:00 pm to Zilla
In La, trapping season runs from November 20 to March 31. Never heard of a deer staying in a trap. I caught two dogs. One lived, one did not.
