Thanks for sharing the video links- I have been deployed several places with CPT Barbera, but it’s been years since I’ve seen him. It’s nice to hear his voice & fond memories surface.

I work at the same National Guard Post as Sam in Carville. He died from a self inflicted gunshot wound yesterday here. It was very sad and shocking. Everyone who saw him yesterday said he was in a good mood and it seemed like a normal day.

My brother and father used to work out there full time, we all drilled out there, & all worked with Sam years ago. I can’t even imagine having that happen out at GLC. So sad.

From Tracey Barbera:

Sam C. Barbera III, my hero and the love of my life, died Wednesday. Our family is heartbroken and our state has lost a passionate ambassador for the outdoors. Sam suffered traumatic brain injury while serving our country on active duty in Korea, Egypt and Honduras. He later served as Commander of the 239th Military Police Company in Baton Rouge- the first Louisiana Army National Guard unit called to active duty after the attacks of 9/11.

In recent years, Sam was diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). We were so pleased yesterday when the Boston University AD & CTE Center agreed to accept Sam's brain into a long term study to help others who have suffered the ill effects of CTE.

Sam would do anything for anybody at anytime, and even in death, Sam will continue to help others. Please pray for him and our family.

Thanks for posting her message. I know the last few days have been rough for her and the family.
