If you run it on the mufffs don't crack the water wide arse open, just crack it a little bit.

I thought I was for idle only because you didn’t want the prop to spin with no resistance or load. Not sure though.

Keep it below 3000 rpm and you can run it for weeks on muffs. try not to hit it to hard at once and keep top rpm under 5500 rpm on high side for short blasts and your good. Have heavy idled many motors at about 1200 rpm for hours during testing.

Have you ever seen an outboard mechanic work on an engine?
They have a tub that's typically about 3-4 garbage can in size to test the motors under a little load.

I do. Maybe I should have worded it differently. I also thought that revving the engine significantly in neutral would also require more water pressure than the hose and muffs could supply. But again, I'm no mechanic.
