Duck season is still a bit away here in FL and Cabelas has a good sale on these shells. I've used Rio's for sporting clays where they perform great, anyone used their steel for ducks?

Shot them last year for teal and duck season, I will NEVER shoot them again. We would shoot birds as close as 20 yds feathers would fly and so would ducks..we were shooting 3" 1 1/4 oz # 4... I am back to my old trusty Federal Classics...in fact I have a case left over I will only shoot if I run out of Federal...just my 2 cents..

These are more along the lines of my thoughts. Good for target shooting, but I stay away when duck hunting. I feel you really do get what you pay for when it comes to waterfowl loads. There is a marked difference in kill shots when I hunt with say Hevi Metal and Kent's and Rios. I know people love Kent's here, but I just do not.

Every steel load on the market will let a duck fly off after boiling feathers from his body or tail. Lead your ducks a little more and watch them fall when they are shot in the head and neck.

Or

Shoot lead. You can tail shoot a mallard at 50 yards and kill him dead with the right recipe of copper plated 4s

Shots are generally pretty close on decoying birds here. Targets are generally some BWT but also Florida mallards, Scaup, Ringers and Squealers. An occasional canvasback or wigeon will hit the dekes.

I used 3" #4 Estate last year and they were okay. It's not like LA or MS here, some days you are in them and others you may not even pull the trigger.

When you say squealers what species are you referring to?

Could you include a pic with your reply to this question?

Choirboy I would agree, but when u shoot a bird on the water, especially a teal and he flies off that is discouraging. I am just not a fan of the shell. Same shot with the same priced Federal Classis that teal is in my hand!!

I'm sure the rest of the world refers to these as black bellied whistling ducks...

We had this discussion a while back on here. Where I grew up and learned to kill ducks we called the woodduck a squealer.

I mainly hunt the Mississippi river and its backwater lakes up around Vicksburg. I don't mind telling that much because the average fellow might make 3 hunts before he decides it is too much work.

I have seen a many boats come and go. Very few are there for the long haul.
