It notes in the audit report that none of the items were entered into inventory. Part of why it took so long to track is they're having to trace it all from purchase card statements.

Sorry, but this is also a complete failure by the department. Buying that much equipment and not bothering to record the SN or give anything an ID or tracking number is 100% negligence.

It goes all the way up to the governor of you want to assign blame. These two obviously felt like there would be no consequences, and in the reponse section it notes that up until 2013 LDWF had no real system for tracking "high risk" items like expensive fishing reels, and little to no oversight for purchasing cards. Alludes to this being the norm for state agencies until that time. The oil spill hit and it was literally a free for all. No one, all the way up to Jindal, recognized that if the BP money wasn't spent in an organized fashion then it would get pissed away or walk off, so it did.

Are you not concerned with the physical fitness of ldwf agents? This seems like a completly rational and responsible thing for the ldwf to be purchasing. These two really are something else.

I worked for ldwf many years ago as a student employee. I thought some of the waste I saw was bad, I didn't even know I could have probably gotten one of the agents to take me on a shopping spree funded by tax payers.

It wasn't just LDWF. This was the policy for all state agencies. No matter the total cost, if the individual item was under $1000 then it was not required to be entered into inventory nor the purchase approved by a supervisor. Imagine the computers, tools, fuel, etc that have walked off from various LA government agencies over the years next time you're writing that check for your state tax bill.

This shite is REALLY bad. They need to be held accountable. At the very least, anyone from LA should boycott their charter and spread the word of their theft and deception of LDWF. I honestly can't believe how blatantly they got away with this. frick the Newmans and frick Journey South

And we're supposed to feel obligated to give more and more to these agencies "for the greater good".

I'm so sick of this incompetence. Some of it is borderline conspiracy, IMO.

Worth noting that all waste associated with that program are dwarfed by the cost of Bobby's Sand Castles in the Gulf.

Do any of these rods and reels have serial numbers? They almost certainly do. However, they were probably not recorded, which may have been part of this duo's scheme.

They do not have any serial numbers. I know the head of LDWF met with DA's office, but prescription has run out for some of the charges that should have been brought against them.

Nice enough to let charter customers use it and pocket the fees.

That was about the going rate for camps during the oil spill. I know people in grand isle who had pretty crappy camps and let BP foot the bill to house some workers. They tore old camp down, and built a newer nicer one!

You can call it price gouging, or capitalism, or supply and demand

Then refer it over to the Feds who have 20 year sentences for every count of wire fraud and add in the tax evasion components.

I'd bet not as nice as you'd think. I know people with a houseboat down there that made $$ after the oil spill. From what I understand the Coast Guard was offering something like $125/day PER bedroom to secure places to stay while cleanup efforts were underway. A 4 bedroom camp would get $15k in a 30 day period.

That makes a lot of sense, I was not taking the oil spill "boom" timeline into account.

When it came to stuff like that they didn't really have much of a choice, not like there's any hotels in the area to house all these people. They'd have had to arrange transportation and hotels to/from the New Orleans area everyday. I'd like to think they were smart enough to have people who rented out camps agree not to sue for loss of use/loss of revenue but who knows. $125 per room is less than what an individual hotel room + transportation would have cost.

Sure, but locking in that price for 2.5 years?
