Well I'm not LE or military so luckily I haven't seen anything gruesome. But I ALWAYS practice with new shooters with the guns dry. Dry fire practice and weapon manipulation with the gun UNLOADED has to happen before you can step up to the range. If you have been hunting your whole life, the transition won't be difficult. You'll just have to get used to how much smaller it is. Imagine the pistol has a rifle-length barrel and take caution appropriately.

but it wasn't always like this - novices, females particularly, often had the opposite problem - a fear or apprehension around the weapon, rather than an appropriate level of respect and caution.

Anyone is afraid of the unknown and unless said female has grown up around firearms, her emotions will be on overdrive and fear will take over. It's really just fear of the unknown. I have seen multiple women do complete 180s after training with me. They feel empowered since they learn to harness the power of the single best equalizing device on the planet. This makes the size of her attacker irrelevant as we are all human and not bullet proof.

If you are new to shooting, I strongly suggest you get some formal training at a range. You have to learn the safety rules and practice them EVERY SINGLE TIME. In no particular order, these 4 are pretty much the commandments:

1. Assume all guns are loaded.

2. Never point your barrel at anything you're not willing to destroy.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you're ready to fire. (Keep your finger "indexed," meaning flat along the frame OUT OF the trigger guard.)

4. Know your intended target and what's BEYOND it.

Now as for a suggestion, I sum it up in a video on my YouTube channel. I'm on my phone so I can't link it, but someone else will.

Happy shooting.

My first handgun was a CZ 75B, which is what I recommend to any first timer. I've also owned Glocks, Kimbers, HKs, Sigs, Colts and Rugers. My first love is a 1911, but I don't think I'd recommend one to a first time gun buyer...at least not based on my experience with disassembling my Kimber 3" Ultra CDP II. What a pain that is....

The rounds are called "cop killers" for crying out loud. If I'm bring robbed or my home is being invaded, I know they're more than adequate to drop the perpetrator

The 5.7x28 is really just a downsized .223. The bullet is actually 5.56mm and NOT 5.7. I guess FN wanted to separate themselves from the crowd and decided to do that.

So basically it's an AR pistol except that the bullets weigh less and are flying slower. They were also designed to be shot out of the FN P90 and not the FiveseveN pistol. So you won't get nearly as effective muzzle velocity out of the pistol, granted it will still be pretty good.

But as a first gun it is absolutely terrible. It's expensive to shoot, it's semi-exotic, aftermarket parts are expensive, and it shares no commonalities with other common pistols.

Then again, if he has OT baller money, it might be a fun choice.

First, it's a "real crime stopper," but now it's a "cop killer." Wow, I guess the 5.7 can do everything. What I was expecting was some objective info.

Most folks either love the 5.7 or don't. I'm in the latter category. The 5.7 was developed at the request of NATO to avoid the restrictions of the Hague Convention; the purpose was to develop a full auto Personal Defense Weapon to shoot armor piercing rounds that would penetrate ballistic vests better than traditional pistol rounds. The same armor piercing rounds that started the "cop killer" story are available only to law enforcement. Ballistically, a 5.7 handgun is shooting a 40 grain bullet at a muzzle velocity that's less than a 22 Mag rifle; that doesn't impress me much. True, the 5.7 produces very interesting wounds when fired into ballistic gel. But my choice for a self defense handgun and ammo will be based on real life reports as a fight stopper. There's lots of good info available supporting the 9mm, 357 Mag, 357 Sig, 40 S&W and 45 ACP as good fight stoppers. I've not yet seen similar info for the 5.7. If it's out there, I'll re-evaluate my thoughts. Until then, I'll use one of the above as a self defense handgun, not the 5.7.

As far, as the "cop killer" story gets, it's similar to that of the original "cop killer" bullets, the Black Talon, a creation of an anti-gun media. It's been a few months since I last researched it, but at that time I could not find a reliable report of a single US LEO death from the 5.7. If that's wrong, I'd like to see the info.

Hopefully I've not offended anyone by helping to hijack the thread.

Wasn't arguing its ability to kill police officers, just rolling with what I've heard it referenced as ("cop killer").

Crime stopper? I feel safe knowing I'm carrying armor piercing rounds with the ability to drop an intruder, or someone causing me, or mine, harm

Again, all I said was that the firearm was light, and fun to shoot. I was accurate with it, it's light, and the ammunition is effective. Never argued anything other than my vague experience of firing one on two occasions.

Recommend a Handgun quote: Sig Sauer P226 What I have...love it

I won this gun at an NRA banquet. It's the only gun I've ever seen at the banquets that wasn't NRA labeled. It's a navy SEAL edition. Has a small anchor on the frame and came with SEAL coin in a badass pelican case. It wasn't a gun that was ever in my list of guns I wanted but now that I have it, I LOVE THIS GUN.

I'm also looking to get my first handgun. I have appropriate level of respect for guns and have shot pistols many times. I am looking for a good truck gun and something I could also shoot snake loads out of.

I don't want a judge though. My BIL has one, and I couldn't hit a 3 foot tall stump with the 45 LC from 25 yards.

A big bore revolver (.44 mag or .45lc) would be the best choice for this. For truck gunning, a .44mag full of .44 special self defense loads would be great. .45lc's are going to be cheaper guns but more expensive to shoot.

Downside is you can expect to pay $700+ for just about any good .44mag revolver brand new.
