You may be aware of this, but rigor mortis doesn't last forever. It goes away after 1/2 to 1 day, usually. Then the rabbit is floppy again.

Rabbits can die of heart attacks due to fear.

Maybe snake got within 10 yards of cage and rabbit, who is an OB lurker, saw it and had no fire to kill it with. Consequently, poor rabbit heart done exploded.

I used to run with a guy who had a rabbit pen. He'd catch rabbits in the wild and put them in his pen to train beagles. He swore 1/3 of rabbits would die from a heart attack before he ever let them go in his pen.

The only rabbit I ever owned was named Floppy. I reckon Balls and I came from the same rabbit naming school of thought.

Assuming this is true, it had been a few days since they checked on the rabbit. Then only conclusion that can logically be reached is starvation. Case closed.
