The ivory woodpecker thread got me wanting to break out the camera again. So here are a few shots from this afternoon, knocking the rust off.
Red-Bellied Woodpecker
Blue Jay (bonus points for catching peanut mid-flip)
everybody likes peanuts
birdparratzi got spotted (camera clicks got his attention)
The rare occasion when a mockingbird is NOT being a dick to all the other birds
Brown Thrasher (I love how they always look mad)
Ruby-throated hummingbird (I wasn't setup properly for close up shots or the proper speed for his wings, amateur hour :( - to be fair I was more concentrating on the bigger birds today
I know a lot of people don't like them for various reasons, but these guys are just spectacular looking imo
Have a good one - maybe some more later if I see some interesting ones
EDIT (5:45pm) - got a few more
Downy woodpecker (female I think)
They love the suet blocks
and one more red-bellied one since I had the bigger lens out for it

Good stuff, man! I wish i was this good with my camera. Now you have me thinking practicing on my back yard birds would be a great way to get better

Great pics! A lot of birds seem to go for the whole peanuts. They fly off with them or shell them on the spot? I got a peanut feeder w/ that pole kit, but haven't put anything in it yet.

How come your pics aren't blury and shite like every pic ever made of bigfoot?

Thanks! It depends on the bird - most seem to fly off with the whole thing, crows will occasionally shell them and eat immediately - they also sometimes stuff 2 and 3 of them at a time.

Looks like the same variety I see in Georgia. Occasionally see blue jays and towhees. Have a lot of cardinals.

Best way to get better is to just take tons of pics. For birds I normally just go to shutter priority mode and keep it to 1/500th or higher depending on the light. Ideally I keep it at 1/1000th for the quicker or smaller birds or if you trying to get them in flight.
Best way is just change settings, take shots, change settings take more... rinse repeat. No shortage of technical videos out there on YouTube as well. Good luck, it's a fun hobby.

Great shots. Thanks for posting them. Lot of cool stuff going on with nature all the time. Nice to capture some of it in photographs.

Awesome pics, although I have to admit I was nervous clicking the link after reading the title (backyard birds) and your username (no pants) lol.
