I have an older 12.5’ Slayer Propel. It’s so stable - I don’t think I’ve ever felt tipsy in it and I spend most of my fishing time standing up. I like to point at the bank and let the wind or current push me along. If I get too far or too close to the bank, I lean forward and crank the pedals with my hand a cycle or two to adjust.
You’ll be fine with a bed extender but you’ll probably want a trolly to get it to the water. I have a C-Tug and it has been great but you might also look at the Sidekick system for Natives.
I have an anchor trolley on one side of the kayak and it makes fishing so much better, especially on windy days. The store where I bought the kayak installed it for free when I bought the kayak.
I have a small fish finder with the transducer on an arm that hangs over the side.
One of the knocks against the Slayer Propel was it was very slow turning but you could buy an after-market kit to upgrade your rudder. One other thing is the propel unit needs to be greased after every use. Not a huge deal but you’ll need a tool called a spanner wrench to do so. Keep in mind this applies to my 2016 (I think) kayak so this might have changed.
You made a good choice!
I like reading the stability part. Slayers I think are a little on the narrow side (34 inches) than some others and that concerned me a little. I haven't taken it out yet, I ordered a trolley and it hasn't arrived.
The rudder is completely redesigned and they say it now turns on a dime. I haven't read anything about having to grease the drive after every use and the dealer didn't say anything about it.

Remember - mine is almost 10 years old so things change.
Get a good PFD. Mine is a bright orange because being seen was more important to me than looking cool. Save all the original paperwork including the receipt in a safe place.

Good advice, Fafafohy.

It doesn't say that in the manual. There is a maintenance schedule in the back of the book and off the top of my head I believe it was every six months or so many hours of use to perform certain things.
They have a video series on their website that has everything.

You'll need to purchase a few extra things.

Lubrication Kit
BTW: This same tube of grease can be had on Amazon for $17. But it doesn't come with the grease gun. Not sure how important the grease gun is or if maintenance can be performed without it.
Berleypro Spanner
Apparently this spanner wrench does not work with the older Propel drives. I'm sure something else could be found for cheaper. I haven't really looked around yet.

Be mindful that those hobie pedal drives weigh a freaking ton and you most likely need a cart to launch it if you have any kind of back issues or and other ailments. A lot of people I know that have had them give them up a year or so into it bc of the weight issues.

That’s the exact kind of grease I bought way back when from a local bike store. The grease gun is a must-have for my model because the gears that need to be greased are only accessible via a hole about the diameter of a ballpoint pen and the gears are set further back in the housing.
Maybe it was the summer heat in Texas but the Propel unit definitely made a metal on metal grinding noise sooner than I expected and had to start regular greasing.

That’s good to know. I’ll probably buy the lube kit for the grease gun and just get replacement tubes on Amazon afterwards. The dollar signs can sure add up with these things.
