PONCHATOULA — A battery component factory will not be built at Port Manchac after the governing commission voted against the project Tuesday.

The South Tangipahoa Parish Port Commission unanimously passed a resolution not to allow Syrah Resources to put a graphite refining plant at the port, citing "the potential adverse impact to the environment."

The proposal had drawn community opposition since early December. Residents worried the plant would pollute the swampy waters of North Pass, which connects Lake Maurepas and Lake Pontchartrain.

I'll give you one thing I noticed and it's not in the permit application. They applied for and were approved for the exact facility in the neighboring parish then closed the project without ever breaking ground.

Can you give us some more information or a link? I am interested in what you are talking about.

Now what the board should do is abolish the port and the port commission and get rid of any property taxes they are collecting.

The port commission is and always has been a mini boondoggle.
