I really would make an effort to rebuild a native quail population in Louisiana and start on my new 25K acres

I like the way you think... Do you have any quail now?

I'd also like to buy a ton of land in LA and attempt to make leasing land for deer hunting half arse affordable again in decent areas.

I have a dozen in my freezer if that counts?

We MAY have a covey or two of wild ones left, but with the 25K, plenty of places for them to hang out, so it's hard to say.

My former boss has a shite ton of cash and land. He releases two thousand on his property in Virginia every year at age 6 weeks. He says they still have some instinct development left at that age, but also figures he has a 50% mortality rate before he fires a shot. I've hunted over his birds before and they're as good as wild, but cannot survive the Virginia winter. He stocks his place with these new hybrids call Tennessee Reds...kinda like a juiced up Bobwhite. They're supposed to be a little smarter and tougher (not the meat) than bobwhites.

Might be the stock he is getting, if bobwhites can survive midwest winters they can survive Virginia winters.

I had an interesting conversation with the owner of Long River Lodge a couple of months ago at a woodcock dinner. They farm ~5k acres and have tried a number of different techniques to gt wild birds, he has gone to mass bird releases in the fall before the hawks have migrated. He is seeing positive results. The neighbor's lands with good cover are also seeing birds for the first time in years...

Did he mention if he thinks they're breeding?

Money is about to make my world go around. I may not stop at Quail. I bet Pheasants would be alright, maybe some turkeys. Oh, and dont forget about the stocked ponds. One for bass, one for catfish and sacauperch.

Oh, and I would develop a few fields just for dove hunting. I got in the habit of going out in the afternoons during duck season (because our duck season sucked) and popping off at doves. Forgot how much fun that can be when its not 100 degrees and you're just waiting for the LSU game to start!

Yes they are. LDWF does not consider a quail wild unless it was born to parents that were born in the wild. He is perfectly happy with one breeding...

A very tough bird, for some reason they really didn't take off with the restocking in SW Louisiana, and the season has now ceased. I did see a wild bird a couple of years ago next to some railroad tracks near Kinder...

I only want three... Cape Buffalo, Greater Kudu and Oryx... After that, just sightseeing for me...

Land in St. Francisville, retire and move to Central and hunt and fish until I died. I would pay my brother and a couple friends to manage it for me.

Also, I'd take the OB on one of those high dollar hunts in Scotland or Ireland where you have to dress up like an a-hole and shoot pheasants that the beaters drive to you.

We'd get kicked out of Europe.

and drink really fine single malt? I'm in...

A friend of mine is from Scotland and he has never come out and said it, but I think he is very well connected over there. He said if I ever end up in Scotland to let him know and he will have some friends bring me driven shooting and get me on St. Andrews for golf...

the stockings were a long time ago too.. and some still survive in one piece of land along intracoastal...

can't have pheasants in LA in areas with a documented turkey pop..

nesting success was very low....

I saw mention at some point of the lack of calcium in the soil might have made for weak eggs, but yea, the turkeys are hell on a chick...
