Like Salmon said, dogwoods want partially shade. I planted one in full sun one time. Huge mistake. It never grew and I pulled it out after a few years.

Redbud will do great in full sun. I have one and it's exploded over the past few years. Same for fig trees.

They'll need good water when establishing them. Make sure you consider the drainage of your spot along with the tree you plan on planting. A lot of trees don't like to be in poorly draining soil but others will thrive in it

My backyard slants. A drainage servitude runs in the middle, so drainage is definitely not a problem, unless i plant in a low-lying area.

What is the max height of a fig tree. And what is the common fig tree grown down here in BR? My grandma had a fig tree growing up (pointe coupee parish) I don't remember it getting very tall, but man that thing put out some delicious figs.

consider soil type and drainage through the soil, not just on top of the ground

They can get 15' to 20' tall, but once established you can cut them back regularly to help keep them manageable.

I have no idea what kind to plant, I just planted two myself and grabbed whatever the local hardware store had

most fig trees are self pollinators, some aren't. make sure the one you buy is a self pollinator, if you plan on planting only one.

Plant in the fall
You water it in immediately with the hose. Just let the water run for five-eight min.
The hole should be half of a shovel width extra than the width of the root ball.
Top of the root ball should stick out of the ground for two or three inches.
The clay you dig up should make a lip around the mound so that it catches water.
Back fill the the hole with soil. Compact it in to make sure the trees are firmly in the hole. Use rebar to secure until roots dig in.

Oh yeah cut slits into the root ball before planting.

Thanks for this thread. Actually looking into planting 4 trees behind a little fence I just built in my yard. I was thinking crape myrtles or Cherry, but the redbud and dogwood looks nice too. Can you get white crapes or pink cherry blossoms in BR?

I use to plant trees on a daily basis. Do exactly what I said and it will be fine. Your going to have to water them everyday for 5-8 min. Just pull your hose out to the tree(s) and let it run. The clay lip is important.

I started a thread last week asking about fig trees.

LINK

After reading the responses and talking to a few other people I went with a celeste. Planted it this weekend.

I've got seven Natchez (white) crepe myrtles in my backyard. I love' em. You should be able to find them at any nursery in town.

Don't put anything in the hole that didn't come out of it and dig an ugly hole you don't want to make a pot where the water just sits in it. Most folks plant trees to deep.

Well dammit man. I have put the dirt back in the hole going on three times now. Is there a hidden camera on me?

according to most of these needed things, we would have been out of the nursery business 32 yrs ago from everything dying. Man we can complicate something simple.

Don't really remember. I put them in about four years ago. That sounds like a good price though.

The only way I've had planted roses live is mixing potting soil with the soil I removed. No idea why that made a difference.

I think I'd wait until winter.

Not saying it can't be done right now, just going to have to really stay on top of the watering.
