I used a big arse soundproof box stand and a sleeping bag. iPhone loaded with games and an external battery helps too.

Try late afternoon hunts. Also we hunted on ladder stands that I built and he would go behind me and use the tree to lean back on. He was hyper usually but in that setting he was still to where we had deer and even a pair of bobcats walk under the stand. And there was space between me and him to where he was free to move around

Looks like sugar may be the problem. I still give mine the same shite and hes 11 now. I've found that after they shoot or shoot at their first deer the whole be quiet and sit still thing finally clicks in their little brain. Also remember when you take them in the woods with you its for them not you. When mine got bored or wouldnt sit still we got down and walked around the area we were in or went back to the camp. Whatever you do dont get aggravated because they will get discouraged quick. Good luck and congrats on a little one to pass the love of outdoors down to!

Just had another on come in that he couldn't get a shot at. He was eating a sandwich and hunkered down so maybe it will click soon.

Sounds like little dude doesn't understand the concept of deer hunting.
I can take my 8 year old with the same gear I take for myself. he has gone with me for three years. I just try to keep him warm. Usually bring a snack and a thermos of hot chicolate.

You don't keep him quiet. You enjoy your time with him before he becomes a teenager and wants to do his own thing.

I’d just guess that the one who needs training in this situation is the adult. Don’t blame the kid for acting in a predictable manner under the circumstances (and diet).

You don’t. You take him, have fun and expect to not kill anything. Bonus if you do.

Soda was caffeine and sugar free but switched him to sandwiches. Made a bit of difference. More than anything getting busted twice made him realize what being still actually meant. Can't seem to post pic on phone

Love it. Some atrocious advice in this thread.
Glad your boy got it done.

Thats a big kid or a little deer...... just kidding. Thats awesome. You will never forget it

Bit of both. Most 8 year olds aren't 4'9" and 95#. That being said that was one tiny arse deer. Next one has to be 7 or better or a doe, but first deer should probably be tiny. Gives you something to build on.

My son just turned 9 last month, he's 5'2" @ 105lb.
Daughter turns 11 in February, she's 5'5" @ 110lb.
If he plays sports soon, you'll be hearing "I need to see your kid's birth certificate," at every sporting event

What worked for us is the would pick the stand that morning, depending on which way the wind would blow.
And we built stands with insulation/foam board on the floor to help with the sound.
