Purchased one for $50 new reconditioned reel at basspro shops. Anybody have much experience with this reel for fishing in the bay and light offshore use. Also does anyone know if these were discontinued. I was surprised at the $50 price I believe these were over $100 new in box

There's a Penn Battle 3 now. It's a decent reel. I had one but since upgraded to the Spinfisher VI which is sealed.

The Battle II's are widely available. I have a 3000, and it has given me years of quality service.

Penn Battle is probably one of the more popular spinning reels out there. They're great for the money IMO

Thats a good deal on a good reel. I have a couple of Battle 3000s that I keep rigged for specs/reds on 7' Battle rods. No trouble with the reels at all.

Series III is out on most of the Penn spinning reels. Not sure what the upgrades were, but the IIs are phased out.

I have four. One is a 3000 and the other three are 2500s. Amazon was running a deal that sold a single 2500 for $60 brand new awhile back. A few friends and I all decided to order one. To our surprise, we each got two reels for the price of one.

My reels are 3-5 years old now and still going strong. I use them for my reds and specks all the time. The rubber piece is good for keeping my braid from slipping on the spool.

You don't use a mono backing?

Zero reasons to use mono backing with the battle reels, or any reel with a rubber/silicon line holder on it. I have/owned 7 battle 2 reels ranging from 1000-8000 size and a battle 3 6000. Never had a braid slip issue EVER. All are good reels, been submerged in saltwater multiple times and all have been fished exclusively in salt or brackish water. Other than getting a little stiff after tons of salt water got in the grease and me needing to degrease the gears I've never had a mechanical problem.

I still would prefer my 3 Shimano DC reels for slot trout and reds any day of the week.

You don’t have to with those reels because of their design. I’ve never had any slip because of this piece on the spool
