I just called a dealer about a side-by-side in Texas. He told me since it was a recreational vehicle and I was out of state, I would have to pay Texas state taxes and Louisiana state taxes. Then I would have to contest the taxes are paid in Texas. This sounds like a PITA. How difficult is this to do?

It's a lie.

You don't have to pay texas sales tax.

Call atvzone or friendly. They'll match or beat it.

Wtf would they say that then. He said 2 things, they cannot finance out of state people and the sales tax issue. I didnt make sense to me either due to just buying a car in Houston, but I thought maybe an ATV was different

He's a small dealer and he didn't feel like it. His plan is to just pocket your taxes.

I'd find a new dealer. From what I remember, if an out of state dealer collects sales tax, they're supposed to send the collected taxes to your state's tax collecting department. The only instance I can think of where you pay sales tax twice is if the tax collected by the dealer doesn't cover the sales tax rate of the home state

Thats what happened to the SUV I bought in Houston last year. I figured it was the same type of deal

It does.

And one reason it is has become common for states to report these purchases to one another.

You sign paperwork stating that youre an out of state buyer and that state is not entitled to your tax dollars.

Dealership turns in that paperwork. The state then alerts your home state you purchased a vehicle. They send you a bill with interest.

Because two states OMVs are involved, they have at best a 50% success rate at collecting
