Looking to pick one up. Obviously, my default choice is Benchmade Infidel.

Other contenders would be the Microtechs - but even more expensive and no real path to discounts.

Anybody have likes/dislikes? (I know these are basically toys, but I love knives.)

I have a cheap Smith and Wesson OTF. I highly recommend staying away from it. It's a huge piece of shite.

I have a custom and production Microtech OTF.

The custom one is an Ultratech with a DLC single blade. It is nice but I bought it when I first started collecting knives and wasn't the wisest of purchases.

The production one is a UTX-85 with a double sided blade that I love. It is a little smaller than the Ultratech, but I'm not a big guy so it works. Paid 1/4 of what I paid for the custom one and use it way more. It was a knife show special so I got it a little cheaper that what you can get it for in stores. Should be around $300 in stores, maybe $250 if you can find a sale.

Both of mine have the switch on the thin side unlike the broad side in the Benchmade that you posted. Benchmade makes a nice knife, but I'm partial to the Microtechs. Microtech also makes one like your picture called the Dirac that I really like. Some of the customs ones are amazing looking but in the end, it is still a knife and should be carried/used.

Yeah, I can get between those numbers for an Infidel. I do like the Ultratech, because I think it would get more actual use as a knife.

I've looked at Protech (also a good maker that specializes in automatics) and Boker autos (great values), but nothing OTF really leaps out other than the Benchmades and Microtechs.

I have a Smith dagger-style boot knife that I'm happy with. I've never seen a single folding knife of theirs (I know they just contract with some Chicom firm to make them to fit a specific price, however brutal) I thought would be worth even throwing $10 or $15, especially in 2020 when a little bit of careful shopping can net you a helluva knife in the $20 or $25 range.

Obviously, OTF has to suggest a little more budget.

I don't remember where I got it but I didn't pay for it. That said, I wouldn't pay the $30 it retails for. I haven't handled many OTF knives but they seem really cool if you get a good one.

I made the thread about really enjoying a cheap arse $30 OTF I bought. It's been going back and forth with my Mini Grip as my EDC. I'm normally a <$100 knife sort of guy but I've been contemplating the two you mention since I enjoyed the DA OTF so much. I'm afraid if I dropped $300 on a knife I would treat it like a porcelain heirloom instead of a tool. I've actually been looking at the CobraTeck as a $100 middle ground with decent D2 tool steel blades.

I have found after playing with the Microtechs and Benchmades and owning this cheap lightning I think I prefer the button on the spine of the handle instead of the side. Feels more natural to me the way I hold a knife.

I have both an Infidel and a Microtech.

I probably prefer the Microtech as I prefer the position of the switch and I prefer a single edge to a double edge.

Although the brands are comparable, Microtech is probably a better OTF choice, all other things considered, even if it is only a slight difference, I think they get the nod there.

I have no experience with Microtech's side openers and Benchmade is about as solid as they get in that area (possibly excepting Protech) for a production knife - their Axis autos, particularly, but even their push buttons (I was considering an AFO II at one point).

But, I would almost rather a manual Axis - they're plenty quick as it is, and usually heavy so the auto makes it heavier.

The other paradox is - if I went Benchmade, 99% I would get an Infidel. If I went Microtech, 95% I would get an Ultratech.

Without having a lot of experience with them, I think I would like the Infidel (or Dirac for the Microtech equivalent) mechanism to the side action for most Microtechs but would likely be okay with either.

What's the weight like on the Ultratech? Is is balanced?
