this thread on laws is mis leading. Open carry and CCW are different as well as in different states. I see that some are talking different styles of carry and I see different states were mentioned. If you want the laws, best thing to do is read up on the laws.

Now to play devils advocate here on open carry. If you open carry do you thing a mugger will mug you or rob you as you walk the street? All the folks that are robbed could be carrying concealed but that does not seem to stop the bad guys.

The streets could be full of off duty officers or under cover officers, but crime still happens. Put a uniformed cop in place and guess what, the presence of the uniform deters the crime.

The point of the holsters where a bad guy can get your gun, Doubt that will ever happen, Most street thugs go in for a quick stike. I have seen the videos of the holsters breaking and such with the bad guy getting the gun, kind of like the movies where you can grab the slide off a Beretta handgun. Doubt that will ever happen.

I agree that 95% open carry just because they can. But I also think most of the 95% know what they are doing.
I like the option where if I want to I can.

going shopping I think I would CC.
stopping for gas at night and the crowd looks rough, slap it on and pump gas.

I carry concealed whenever the limits of the laws pertaining to cc allow me to. I have no problem w/ those who choose to exercise their legal right to open carry, but as far as I'm concerned, I'll stay w/ cc. My personal reasons I do not open carry are the same as those mentioned earlier by FiveO, FelicianaTigerfan and dawg23.

I don't do it because I don't want to draw that much attention to myself. I like to not be noticed.

No open carry for me. I prefer concealed. Too many people out there that freak out at the sight of a gun being carried by anyone that isnt a cop.

For me, if going shopping I definitely WILL CC.

Or even better, drive to a gas station in a better situation. Since I've started CC, I find that I pay a lot more attention to "situational awareness." Since CC, I've driven by a lot of gas stations just because I didn't like the situation. You probably already do the same thing, but thought I'd mention it for anyone else who doesn't.

Something to remember about open carrying. You set yourself up for attention. Many people aren't aware of the law and will call 911 if they see someone walking round with a gun. If you are approached by LE, make sure you handle it appropriately. Don't be a douche just cause you are within your right.

Tigerfan got this right. Those that do it for attention or because it makes them feel important shed a negative light on the pro-gun community. Better to get your CCL and be inconspicuous. Don't advertise that you carry.
