The alligator snapping turtle is listed as threatened in the US, and is completely gone from some states
You are allowed one a day per boat in Louisiana and there are a lot more than people realize, you just don't see them. Well, I do, when I want one.

If you get a chance to stop by Bass Pro Shop in Denham Springs there's a 197lb Snapping Turtle in the tank there. It's the biggest I've ever seen. The sign reads it was 136 when captured 10 years ago. She must be eating well in captivity

I’ve seen it a few times and enjoy stopping there when we’re in the area for that reason alone. Back when I learned about Denham flooding, one of my first thoughts was,”I hope that turtle made out okay.”

Yeah, well it’s a turtle. I’m pretty sure it could survive a flooded building.

There actually IS a volkswagen down there at the dam (Toledo bend). At least there was 25 yrs ago. People scratched their names on it. NEVER saw any man-eating catfish like I heard about. Hell, never saw a catfish there, period.Only dove there twice though.

That’s actually my cousins truck. And the turtle is living a comfortable life in a giant homemade pond in my back yard. With a smaller female that had 2 clutches of babies that I released in the Westwego canal in Bayou Segnette

Friend caught this one in Lake Bistineau. He told me it was released unharmed.

Damn, that's a big turtle. I'd surely release one that big if I caught it.

Pretty sure it's dead. They don't let their legs hang dangling like that under pressure.
