Ok,kind of a spin off,learning about rifle scopes,where to start?

There's an old race car racing saying. Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?

You got a budget?

What ranges do you think you willl be shooting? 100 yds or less? 100-300? 300+? Etc...

What will you be shooting at?

Do you want variable power or would you consider a fixed scope?

The only brands I consider are Swarovski and Zeiss. I know people who like Khales.

And you don't need a book. This is how they work. Some see shite real clear and hold zero. Of those, some are super god damn expensive. Bang for your buck, Leopold makes the best glass with the best warranty. Period.





















That should start a pretty damn good fight.

I have them from a VX1 to an MK4. On everything from custom 22 LR to 300 wsm. None have ever given me one problem. They all hold zero and they zero easy.

For optics, or mechanics? Which is your main reason for choosing these?

I would recommend doing your research for what you want in a scope.
Do you want a great long range precision scope that supersedes the guns abilities, or is a scope that gets you on 12" steel at 600 yards plenty for what you're willing to pay.


Learn what features are selected for a scope to gain different advantages or to reduce cost.
Read up on first/second focal plane, MOA or MRad Reticles and adjustment increments (this will determine how you will calculate holdoffs and which system you are most familiar with), 30mm vs 35mm tube diameters, parallax adjustment etc.

I wish I still had a great link that I think did a good job summarizing all of these different things and when you would prefer one over the other. Ill ETA if I find it.

the best in terms of glass quality. I shoot a Swarovski Z8i, and my next will probably be a Kahles for PRS stuff. Most of the best PRS shooters I know use Kahles.

Nightforce is one of the best in terms of construction.


If you are operating on a budget, buy a Meopta and be done with it. Meopta is the only other brand our Swarovski rep is complimentary of, which is saying something. They make some great scopes with incredible glass for the price. I have one for my 22 and love it.


Check all these out if on a budget:

Meopta Meopta 3-9x40/3-9x50 or 4.5-14x50
Nightforce SHV 3-10x42 or 4-14x5p
Swarovski Z3 3-10x42 or 4-12x50


things to look at when picking a scope:

quality of lenses, quality of lens coatings and spectrum of light that these coatings are optimized for, large ocular lens (large field of view), range of adjustment, greater durability and rigidity, mechanical locking rings instead of adhesive, highly tuned and precisely machined internals for repeatability, large eye box, different reticles and external features, First vs Second Focal Plane, illumination, zero stop feature

I could go on and on. don't skimp out on glass.

Swaro and Kahles are, though. The Cabela's Euro HD line is rebranded Meopta as well, if that helps you find a better deal
