What charters would yall recommend for going offshore for Snapper, Cobia, etc? Looking at the end of July, first week of August. Grand Isle/Port Fourchon. Looking to take some friends of mine out there. Be about 8 of us. I’ve never done the chartered trips before so I thought I’d ask the smart people on the internet first. TIA.

Anyone will be able to put you on snapper. But . . the only way for 8 people will have to be split into 2 charters. Usually 6 is maximum for most charters. Only exception is a walk on trip with Sourthern Pride which is a big boat which takes out 25 people at a time. It is much cheaper but a very different experience.

Here is their latest flyer.

I saw that flyer actually. What makes their experience different? Just the different groups of people who will be on the boat at one time?

Most offshore charters will be 10–12-hour trips on 36-42' boats that get you out fishing quick and back into the marina. These charters will have a max of 6 people like bigfish stated. Depending on weather, you would likely be targeting tuna and/or swordfish and then stopping for a limit of snapper on the way in or out. Finding two charters should be fairly easy to split your group up 4 and 4 but of course this will be quite expensive.

If you are really just wanting to catch some snapper, 250 bones for a day with southern pride will be hard to beat. Ed is a fish killer at heart, and my recommendation if you want to fish with the whole group would be to book a 36 hr trip with Ed. That time of year should give you pretty good odds to have fair weather and make it out to the deep dropping grounds to really load the boat with the full menu of fish species. Ed loves to load the boat....

If you are all somewhat capable fisherman you shouldn’t have any problems. There will be some deckhands but you won’t have the same kind of personal hands on experience as you would with a smaller group. For many that doesn’t matter. Definitely the best value and you will get a lot of meat.

If you know what you are doing your group should be able to bring in a lot of fish. Be prepared for some people on the boat who maybe have never even held a fishing rod. This can cause some problems but generally shouldn’t be an issue for each group as the boat is big enough for everyone to spread out. I do know a guy who lost a big yellowfin tuna due to another guy with a different group on the boat but it’s a long story. Probably an outlier though and not the norm.

Each group will be assigned a different color. The deck hands will tag the fish from your party with the designated color. You can see some lopsided results on fish totals at the end of the trip. They will clean your catch and you get to keep your catch only. They do not divide the meat up amongst other groups.

I just booked with Ed yesterday for the July trip. I'm bringing my son for his first time offshore for his birthday present. Figured it would be perfect for him and I don't have to spend a fortune like usual.

If you want a meat haul, call Pure Adrenalin with Captain Jamie Gaspard. Guy is a fishing machine. Great guy and will definitely be an entertaining trip.

Probably not very PC, but a good dude.

Good info yall and thank you for all the responses!

Me and a couple of the guys in our group have been offshore before. I’m not gonna say we’re very experienced offshore fisherman, but we know how to hook the bait, how to “cast” and reel in, etc. But the other half of my group have zero experience being offshore, and even limited experience fishing in general lol. But those guys are all down to do offshore fishing and to learn how to fish properly. They’re not incompetent people so I’m sure they’ll be able to figure out how things work, especially if we’re just fishing the bottoms for fish. I’m honestly more worried about people getting sea sick, cause that would just ruin the entire experience for those guys lol, but that’s just a part of it I guess. I know there are precautionary measures everyone can take to prevent sea sickness.

Me personally, I just love to haul in good eating fish, and I have always loved catching Red Snapper. I always looked forward to going offshore to catch Snapper, and maybe some bonus catches with Cobia. Southern Pride sounds like the way to go tbh, so I’ll book that ASAP.

One more question though, how does tipping work for these trips? Is it just one tip you give at the end, or do you tip each deckhand, etc? I want to make sure I do all of those things properly as well, and don’t come off as “bush league”.

I am usually a straight 20% guy but on the 6 pack trips Freeman type trips we are usually closer to 15% because of the high cost.

Same for multi-day hunting trips.

For $600 bass/sac a lait trips I stick with 20%.

You should be good in that range.

I think there are a couple of guides that post here and can tell you whether I am an a-hole or not. lol
