I guess with it being a 1:9 ratio, you actually mean it sucks? I sensed sarcasm.

No.. I'm not too knowledgable when it comes to this stuff but I'm pretty sure with that twist rate you can shoot heavier bullets.

I might be mistaken but I think a 1/9 is better for lighter bullets?

1:9 is better for lighter. Remember, more twist means you can stabilize heavier bullets.

That can be a confusing statement for someone who doesn't understand barrel twist.

A barrel with a 1/9 twist means that it rotates the bullet 360° once in 9" of barrel. So, a 1/10 twist barrel would rotate the bullet once in 10" of barrel and therefore would be considered a slower twist. While a 1/8 would be considered a faster twist. In 5.56/.223 a 1/9 barrel is perfectly fine for most shooters who will be shooting 55-67gr ammo 99% of the time. If you think you will mostly be shooting bullets in the higher 70s grain (shooting matches at longer distance vs just plinking or rolling pigs) then go with a 1/8 twist barrel. Get a 1/7 twist only if you've already been brainwashed by ARFCOM and make sure it is CHF.

What prices should I be looking to pay for 500-1000 rounds? Any websites that are recommended or places to pick up ammo?

I have alerts set up on slick guns at .30/rd but most of the time shipping will ruin the deal. every now and then you'll find some free shipping too

With my employee discount, I get 1000rds of XM193 for .32/rd. .30-.34 is a good deal threshold IMO. Freedom Munitions does 1000rds of 55gr Reman for $328.91. Never had a hiccup with those - they are what I use for plinking and classes

I'm about to start high power service rifle competition.

Do I need higher grain ammo for the 600 yard line and what will it cost me?

I have a national match AR. It's pretty old. Found it on gunbroker. The trigger is really nice and it has a heavy barrel and a weight in the buttstock. I had to replace the rear sight because the windage knob turned freely without clicking.

Mk262 is a little over $1 per round. It is 77 grain Sierra OTM used in our military SPRs (Mk12)

Yeah that's what I figured. I need to get into reloading.

Looking around at stripped uppers. Wanting flat top with FA. The 2 I'm thinking about right now are the Aero precision and the rainier forged upper. Is there any real benefit to spending a lot more on one or is it pretty much an upper is an upper.

Anderson Manufacturing has a good line if uppers and lowers. I'm in the middle of a build now and I recently completed my lower assembly with an Anderson lower. It was $50 and I'm about to buy an Anderson stripped upper off GunBroker for $50.

Have you guys ever had to call a seller on GunBroker to give them your credit card information to pay for your item? This guy is offering it but it seems sketchy.

I subscribe to the school of thought that the stripped lower is the least important part of the build (possibly excluding some pins and springs not associated with the trigger), but the big knock on Anderson lowers is consistency - some guys describe them as a "steal" at $40 to $50 bucks (non-blem), while others complain about sloppiness or loose fit with various uppers (again, after spending a whopping $40 to $50, plus FFL fees, shipping and tax).

But, if I were going for stripped upper and lower (and not using an upper kit, as I intend to do with the first one - probably a BCM and bring my own handguards) - I might consider Anderson on cost - I mean, if you get a set from them and they don't mate well, you can write off the company.

On an unrelated note - I recently tested my Gen 3 PMAGs on an old early 90s Eagle Arms EA-15 and an AR-180b - they will not lock on either weapon, but Gen 2s do.

Interesting going forward. I don't have a huge stash of Gen 3 magazines, but it will give me pause when stocking up in the future.

I mentioned this somewhere a few days ago. The Magpul M3 mags, at least in the beginning were out of spec. Some receiver manufacturers actually altered the magwell on their receivers to function with the dysfunctional mags. Shows the pull Magpul has in the industry, pun intended. I use M2 mags in all my rifles for this reason.
