Defiantly sounds like a fan problem. I have a similar problem before. But my vehicle would also over heat if sitting for a long period of
Time and not
Moving.

Had a similar issue on a toyota. Moving, the air would get cooler, but not cold. Standing still, warmer air. Checked freon, it was low, filled and all is good now. Its an older toyota and I need to fill it once a year at the start of summer.

Update:

Dropped it off at mechanic this am. They close at 12 on Fridays.

Mechanic is still troubleshooting because he didn't start on my car till later.

3 possible issues:
1. Leak in a line
2. Door not functioning properly (?)
3. Compressor

Don't compressors usually work or fail and not work intermittently?

What am I looking at in each scenario?

Thanks

It's called a "blend door actuator", and it is common for them to go out. Doesn't match your symptoms because they'll blow out HOT air randomly on one side when they are bad.

Also, he's probably checking the compressor clutch

When I talked to him he said they were able to get the AC to fail as my wife described. Cold then hot back and forth for no apparent reason.

What am I looking at cost wise for Blend Door Actuator?

What am I looking at cost wise for compressor clutch? I assume that is less expensive then replacing the compressor?

The part is only like $20. I can't remember what side is easy and what side is hard. One takes like 10 minutes if you have infant fingers, and the other takes pretty much an entire day. That's for a Silverado/Tahoe/Suburban.

One weird thing about the blend door actuator is that when it screws up, you can usually just turn off the car and turn it right back on to fix it

Sounds like you have restricted condenser. With no proper air flow the condenser can't condense the refrigerant. Once you start moving, more air is able to flow through, therefore working properly. When your car is idling, turn your A/C on, grab a piece of paper and slide it infront of your condenser (right behind the bumper...the condenser is infront of the radiator) if the paper is sucked up to the condensor, then it's not restricted, if it doesn't get sucked up to it, then your condensor is causing the problem. Most of the time its caused by just dirt and bugs on the grill and fairly easy to be cleaned.

Final Diagnosis:

Hose is leaking refrigerant.
Total Cost: $565

REmove and replace hose. Drain and refill Freon x 2. He said because of the vehicle 2011 GMC Acadia they have to remove the entire front bumper to change hose instead of just the grill like most vehicles.

that's not a bad price to change out that High side line actually. Glad they were able to diagnose your issue. And it's a swing and a miss as far as my online diagnostics go.

No worries. I know that no one can diagnose anything based off of online questions. What sucks is that the labor cost is inflated because the vehicle is built in a way that is not user friendly. Just like chamging the headlight requires removing the front bumper. $130 every damn time.
