Just thought it might be a neat thread to have people post rare/first-time sightings as we all go about our every day outdoor lives.
On our annual trip back from Texarkana this past wknd I saw one of these beauties for the first time flying in a median on I-59 south towards Bossier
Scissor tailed flycatcher...a first for me.
Add in a pair of Mississippi Kites nesting in my in-laws back yard and some beautiful scenery in N. Arkansas on my visit to tour the BassCat factory and it made the trip even more worthwhile.

We get a bunch now in CENLA. Especially in the area around the golf courses.
Had two lifers this year, yellow warbler and fox sparrow.
Killed two crows in my back yard today with my Sig .177.

We had a Swallow Tailed Hawk circle our house a week or so ago. I had never seen one before.

We had a Parasitic Jaeger at a local Panhandle beach for a day last week after that tropical wave came through. A few Magnificent Frigatebird sightings too.
An American Flamingo continues to be seen at St. Marks Wildlife Refuge south of Tallahassee. It was blown in by hurricane Michael and can usually be found.
We get a few Scissor-tailed Flycatchers that move through the Florida Panhandle in the fall. That surprised me, very cool bird but very unusual for Florida.

I had a rose breasted grosbeak eating sunflower seeds at my feeder for 6 days in April. He must have been fueling up for his northern migration. First and only time I’ve seen that species.

Normal array of Titmouses, Chickadees, Carolina Wrens, Goldfinches, Grosbeaks, Cardinals, Brown Headed and White Breasted Nuthatches.
Downy, Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers too.
And Flycatchers that I only hear. Can’t seem to locate them. Haha!

Man... we had a TON of those things out on the farm south of Iowa growing up. Not sure about now, but now I'm curious. They are beautiful

Just saw a painted bunting while doing some field work at our Donaldsonville facility. First time I have ever seen one in person.

Are you talking about a swallow tailed kite?
If so, please report the sighting here: Center for Birds of Prey
They will send you a email at the end of the year showing the sightings.

Yep, that's the bird. I just now sent the sighting info to the link you sent, thanks. I did notify L.S. U. and they sent mw some info.

Got a cardinal nest in one of my rose bushes. We get to observe them through our dining room window.

Who did you notify at LSU? I used to report them to a Jennifer Coulson was was with Tulane and the Orleans Audubon Society Swallow-tailed Kite project but her email went dead a few years ago.

We have these every year. If you want to ensure their return, go to Lowes or Home Depot (Maybe Wally World?) and get the finch socks that are filled with nyger seed.
They will make hourly visits to those things.... nothing else comes close

I actually saw one yesterday as well but I see them fairly frequently in WBR
One I have never seen and I saw this year was an indigo bunting which was really cool

Our baby cardinals are getting bigger.
There’s still 3 of them. The other one was sleeping. Shortly after the photo, momma did a fly by. So I went back inside and she came to feed them.
