I had a cousin pass away recently. The family wants to have a few items made from a tree that was in his back yard. Its a small amount. Probably 10 logs that are about 3-4ft long, 10/12 inches in diameter. This isn't quality wood, but it was his tree.

I debated buying a chainsaw mill and doing it myself, but I'd rather not screw up what little amount of logs we have if there is somewhere local that will do it for a decent price. Just need them cut into planks.

Any recommendations?

3-4 ft x 10-12 inches can be done on a nice sized bandsaw. I’d call a cabinet maker or finish carpenter and explain what you need.

I'm not in the area, but would attempt to do something like that with a bandsaw with decent "re-saw" capacity. Most larger ones can handle ~12-14 inch tall material. And at only 3-4' long, you should be able to manually handle the material. After getting one relatively flat side, you should be able to cut accurately enough to dry it to a point where someone with a jointer and planer can make dimensional lumber out of it (this step is required no matter who mills it)

Call the owner of Acadian Hardwoods & Cypress in Ponchatoula. They are a lumber, plywood, and moulding distributor to cabinet and millwork shops in a 4-5 state area. He use to have a small sawmill that he shut down but I bet he knows some peckerwood guy with a portable sawmill that can help you. Those guys are always sawing up new growth cypress logs and reclaimed pine and cypress beams out of areas like the warehouse district. Riverside Lumber in New Orleans might can give you some names. I’ve been in the hardwood business for over 30 years. There are some people over in that area than can probably help you if you pay them enough. They like to cut sinker cypress logs when they can find them.
