North Alabama Public Duck Hunting

I know there are several posters in this area, so I have a question. I will be at Redstone for about a month during duck season and was wondering if there are any decent public opportunities in that area for duck hunting?
Any advice would be appreciated. Is a boat needed? Any walk in flooded timber? Or is it mainly sloughs off the river?

I've never duck hunted a day in my life. But, I know there's always a lot of people hunting them out at Swan Creek WMA - about a 20 min drive from RSA. I have no idea how to go about it, but most people seem to be in boat blinds.

I haven't hunted in a few years so take this FWIW.
Guntersville is supposedly the best water. I never hunted it but I have friends that do and they seem to do pretty good, They hunt the Goose Pond area out of a boat.
I always hunted the TVA land on the South side of the TN river. You can put in at Cataco Creek ramp at the edge of the refuge and go into the TVA property. Some good holes in there towards the back you can get to by boat. Closer to the road, there is a trail on the east side of the creek that goes down to the water - bunch of flats that may or may not have water depending on the river level. Always did good on those if there was water. Can also find woodies along the edges in flooded timber.
EDIT - After thinking - my "few years" is actually 10 or 11.

Try Wheeler WMA... specifically in the water next to I65... place is loaded with ducks.

Wheeler is a Refuge - No duck hunting allowed.

Wow Chris. Great info. I'm over in Hampton Cove...
I'll look those areas up. I've floated down the Flint in a canoe and there's plenty of woodies around there too...just gotta be stopped to shoot...easier said than done.
I've seen some photos of the rafts of divers on G'ville. I've seen the Cans piled up next to the bridge. Lots of Grey ducks (Gadwall), scaup, and bluebills. I know some folks that hunt further up near Scottsboro that do well as well. But on private land.
Funny thing about RSA..they say no duck hunting allowed, but I've looked at the tally sheet at the shack where you check-in..and there's always waterfowl listed as killed. I don't understand that one.

I have a boat and friends near Decatur so I’m sorta familiar with the area.
ETA: Military too...

So is the TVA land between the boat ramp and I-65? I know it’s real marshy looking on the east side of the Decatur bridge

Yeah half of the hunters in Arkansas the last five years are from Alabama it seems.

No. Further East. At Cataco creek, south of Sharp Ford road is TVA. North from that road to the river is Wheeler. All of that under 65, east to Mooresville is Wheeler.

FWIW, I was kidding about duck hunting near the I65 bridge... I live 10 minutes from there.

What about all those birds stacked up by Point Mallard?

Best bet would be Swan Creek Mgnt Area over there. Its hit or miss, like anywhere else. But when the birds are in the area, it's a good place to be. Just make sure you don't setup close to the big floating blinds. Good folks out there as long as you dont pass shoot or shoot into working ducks. If you want to shoot some gads and divers, head towards Guntersville/Scottsboro.
