One thing to consider. I hunt with benelli shotguns. From my experience with them, you don’t want to shoot too many 3.5 shells with them. 3.5 kick like a mule in inertia guns. I would get him a gas gun if he has to have 3.5 and plans on shooting them a lot.

I’d like the 3 1/2 for turkeys ducks and geese. I’d like a shotgun to cover everything from doves on up

Yep. Well built and very durable. I like shooting mine better than my nice Beretta O/U. A perfect young man's gun. Half the guys I knew in my 20's had one and I missed out not getting one until later.

My Maxus (gen 1) has been bullet proof, just can't shoot 7/8 dove load in the 3.5" or won't cycle. You can get a new Beretta A300 for around 1000. Just don't think any of the "three B's" have any semi autos under a 1000 anymore.
