With these cold fronts making their way through it means that the fall/winter fishing pattern is about to turn on in coastal LA. I'd like to start looking into wade fishing this year and need some recs on some quality cold water waders/boots that won't break the bank. Any wading tips would also be welcomed. Academy reviews aren't very helpful.

Any other items I should think about getting? I did manage to acquire a Simms wading belt at a CCA event last year and I have a floating net that I use while yak fishing.

Simms boots and waders If you want the best. Ask on a Texas fishing site. That’s all most hardcore fisherman around here do is wade, especially for big trout in the winter.

Buy once, cry once, Simms is the only gear I buy. You can test out my backup pair of waders when the time comes. Very possible I can hook you up but that’s top secret so don’t let it get out. Simmsfishing.com has a sale site that can have great deals on base layers, jackets, winter hats/caps.
It’s actually time to order another pair of wading boots.
Ditch the wading net, use your hands or boga grip. Suggest headwaters waders, cheapest goretex they have and they come with a belt. Or if you want to ball go with the G4Z $800.00!

You can wade in neoprene duck waders in colder months if you already have a pair. If you are buying waders specifically for fishing I would recommend the thinner nylon type from Simms, Orvis, Patagonia, and maybe Frog Togg.

FWIW I have a pair of Orvis Silversonic waders and some Simms Freestone boots I found new in box on ebay for 1/4 of the price.

If you buy stocking foot waders I would absolutely go with Simms boots. They have held up extremely well and are comfortable + durable.

This is what I do....But I've gotten away from wading....I like my boat.

All you need is a good wade belt that holds a small tackle box, a rod holder, some pliers, a boga grip, and a stringer if you want to keep them.

Nets and other floating items tend to get in the way when the fish gets close. More shite to get tangled up and cause you to lose the fish.

Kemosabe won't be seen wading w me because I don't have the Simms gear.

Lol....we know a bit more about wade fishing in the Pac NW and dealing with the cold than those folk.

I'll be on the water tomorrow at 730 and it'll be 31°.

I wear Simms chest waders. I have White River boots but I'm in a drift boat so I could save a few bucks. They work just as good imo.

The best wade boots are Korkers but you won't need all that (felt bottoms/spikes) More for dealing with rocks etc. My boots are rubber soled.

I'll be wearing heavy smart wool socks. Dont forget to get a bigger size boot for your socks.

I'll have on terramar long wool underwear under my pants.

Fleece top with a jacket on. Wool beenie and fingerless wool gloves over nitrile latex gloves so I can still tie knots/work with bait.

I also have 2 Mr. Heaters on board of course the guy on the oars gets little of it, that being me.

You can do both. I do although it's a different situation. It's nice getting away from bank fishermen then go wading.

They are sick but I couldn't spend more than 200 for my free stones just for better convenience on taking a piss.

One day maybe....

What he said, base layer stuff you can go with less expensive brands from Academy, Bass Pro, etc but for outer wear it's only Simms for us. I've had G3 waders and a guide jacket for about 8 or 9 years and I fish a lot in the winter, I sent the waders back about 3 years ago for them to check a seam and to recondition the Gor Tex and a week later I had a new pair sitting on the porch with a note from them thanking me for using them for all these years, I have bought probably a half dozen pair from them over the years with outfitting the whole family. We usually only use Simms boots as well but this summer we picked up some Soft Science Wading boots due to them being on sale and I like mine for summer time wet wading, they are super lite weight, I'll stick with my Simms Guide boots for winter wading though. Also agree with a Boga, a net will only get in the way.

All the guides here wear a Simms guide jacket although they are supported by Simms.

I’m sure it’s a great jacket but being in the NW you always own good rain gear before you learn to fish long story short I already own 3 rain coats and layering is important so I’ll never own one. I wear a Helly Hansen rain coat when it comes down.

Always something else more important I need besides owning another coat.

I really like my Wade Right wading belt, especially since it has an extra rod holder on the belt.

I do most of my wading in the summertime in water any wear from 1-3.5’ deep. The Wade Right system keeps my extra rod, tackle box, and pliers out of the water.

I’ve got some 3.5 mm Cabelas classic neoprene waders with the big tennis shoe boots. I only use them once or twice a year at Thanksgiving to go stick the big sow flounders.

Cheap but functional. I’ve worn them when it was in the 30’s and was toasty warm.I've had them for 17 years.

Best night was a 7 1/2 pounder, two 7 pounders, five in the 6 to 7 pound range, and two 5 pound runt’s because my Momma wanted some “ small “ ones.

I like to wade a lot in the early spring when water is still pretty chilly. I just wear my neoprene hunting waders until it warms up and then switch to some magellan breathables.
Floating net is a must, but I also like to use the floating ring for keeping fish in. It has a plano box mounted on top to keep some extra gear (rest is in my wader chest pocket) and also give you somewhat of a table to work on if needed.
Boga grip is a huge plus for me as well, since if you drop one wading, she gone.

One thing, clean your reels a little better than normal each time. It's inevitable that they will get dunked when wading.

Does anyone need a kidney? Because it looks like I will have to sell one to get some of those set ups.

In the OBs infinite wisdom, if you had to skimp on either boots or waders what would it be? I am also a pretty serious duck hunter so I am looking pretty heavily at the camo Bulkley Jacket to use for both wading and hunting.

That's why they make floats for them.

Guess i have been lucky, have never dunked a reel and almost never rinse.

Wading jacket goes outside of waders so it can't have insulation. You can use that coat but eventually you're going to take a wave over your waders and get wet.
My outfit is Columbia 4.0 base top, Smartwool heavy bottoms, Fleece wader pants, Simms wool pullover, Smartwool socks & Simms guide jacket over waders.
By having your jacket under wader belt, you get a couple more inches of free boad on wader top.

Boots. As referenced in earlier post CHECK EBAY for discontinued or discounted pair. If you aren't wading alot of shell bottom, or freshwater rocky rivers/streams, then you can save some money and buy cheaper.

Better quality waders often come with better customer service backing for repairs

Of course, and I have one on mine. I was referring to dropping a fish. Drop one in the boat and you just pick it up. Much easier to get the fish in the basket with a boga when wading.

Torch, where do you fish? Not sure those would hold up well in Big Lake.
