Having hunted most of my life and experiencing a couple of incidents that prevented me or my brother from killing large, long pursued bucks, I can relate to how you feel.
But hunting and life have taught me that there also has to be caution and safe methods used when we go into the woods, fields or lakes with a weapon in our hands. I see some guys say that’s why they never unload or they always leave one in the chamber.
But this has to depend on your surroundings, hunting circumstances and hunting partners. Always leaving a live round in the chamber takes extreme awareness and caution, no hunter wants to miss a chance at the buck of a lifetime but no hunter wants to accidentally take the life of a friend or loved one because they just absolutely couldn’t unload and maybe miss that big one.
Unfortunately a family in our area is living with the sad results of a dad that felt like he had to keep a live round in the chamber till they got back to the truck, no doubt it probably gave him the possibility of shooting that big one if it crossed his path as he headed to the camp, but it also left the possibility of his safety getting bumped into the live position and allowed his rifle to discharge, shooting and killing his young daughter.
Do what you know you can do safely and that you and your family can live with the rest of your lives, no deer is worth risking the life of a loved one or making a mistake that you can never take back. There will be other deer.

Grabbed the wrong gun case out of the truck in the dark last month in South, TX. Get in the blind and unzip it and see stainless. Oh shite, I had my buddy’s .22 Magnum instead of the .270. Deer hunt over before the sun came up. I did at least get to take it out on a Javelina that came out in front of a pissed off hunter. So I feel your pain.

My damn brother had put it on there being funny. I tried to pry it with my pocket knife, no luck. I was too deep and would have messed up other members hunts if I had gone back for the key.
I hope you brought his arse to Sonic and treated him for that.

Highly that’s a sad story. Makes me not feel as bad. I’m back in the stand deer are moving so I’m on his arse again. I’m staying out the plots I’m in the woods hunting a scrape line. I have one in the chamber this go. He comes out his arse is grass

That's what brothers are for.

Yeah cause you’re too stupid to take it out and then load when when you get to the stand the next time. It’s def worth your kids life to minimize the chance of missing a deer.
Aren’t you the moron who swears you keep loaded guns around your kids all the time.
Just another example of how fricking stupid you are.

It is a tragic, sad story, glad you’re back after that buck and just wanted to mention the fact that there are good reasons to not feel bad about an empty chamber. Hope to see a report of your trophy before your vacation ends.

Sorry you had to go through that, but these things happen. I’ve been deer hunting for over 40 years. Earlier this year, I had a nice buck step out. As I slowly eased my rifle into place and went to look through the scope, I realized that I had left the scope cover on. I was able to get it removed without spooking him, but by the time I got it clear, he was gone. Haven’t seen him since. It does not make it any easier to deal with, but these things do happen

You teach them abiut guns, and dangers of them they wont be curious when they find a gun. Was raised my whole life from a small child with loaded guns all over, somehow i didnt shoot one. A gun not loaded is useless.. example A, read OP.

I did this on a nice 8 point. I was 14 or 15 and my dad had done the same thing on a different nice buck that morning. However my story thankfully ended a little better. When I bolted one in, he took off walking and I made a very unethical desperate shot that I’m not proud of. I shot at brown through a couple of pine trees and instantly saw white belly.
Got down there, the bullet entered right behind his right ear and exited the left side of his nose.
Again, I am not proud of that decision or shot and am lucky it ended how it did, but I did put my biggest buck for the next 10 years on the wall that afternoon.

The man forgot to load his gun. It happens. So your solution is to have it loaded all the time.
What about that former LSU player whose dog stepped on his shotgun and blew his leg off. shite happens.
I’d rather miss one deer than kill myself or one of my kids or hunting partners.
But got damn You just might jump a deer and have to go last of the Mohicans on his arse and flip Your gun around and shoot him at a dead run because You’re that damn good.
Honestly guys like you make me fricking sick and if I ever hunted with someone as dumb as you, you’d either unload it or id unload it for you then shove it up your arse.

Of the two of us I’m the only one that does. You unload the fricking thing when you’re not hunting because the only thing you can shoot at that point is yourself or someone else.

A few years ago my brother was hunting this one buck very hard. He had been on him for 2 years. He was hunting a set that had a land that divided a pine thicket and hardwood bottom.
He did several all day hunts and was going constantly to get this buck.
Finally in the middle of the day at like 3pm he steps into the lane eating corn. Crucial because my brother had seen him run across the lane chasing does a few times but he never stopped
This time he was taking his time and eating. 70 yards broad side. My brother rushes and gets on him and squeezes off- deer doesn’t move. He never got the crosshairs on him. My brother goes to rebolt and he white flags and leaves. We shot his gun later and it was dead on
We also frick with each other bad at the camp especially when you miss. Everyone gives you shite and doesn’t pull punches but that evening we couldn’t say a word to him.
I remember looking at him and he was just staring into the wall, I knew he couldn’t stop thinking about that shot. I was broken up for him. Anyways - we were certain he was never coming back to that set so we started trying to find a good spot in the hardwoods to hang a lock on.
One of our uncles step-sons came on his first hunt ever and around 9 years old he shot the buck at 120 yards on a pipeline about a mile away. 142” deer
To this day my brother can’t let that one go. It’s ones thing to miss a deer but he has probbaly 15 cameras out just trying to pattern this one buck for years and when the chips were on the table he threw up on himself.
