For those of you that follow my follies and exploits, I decided I needed a cooper's hawk this year to go with my red tail. Just trapped her today. I plan to chase doves, quail, woodcock, starlings, pigeons, crows, ducks, and bunnies with her.

Pretty bird! What are those brown things attached to her head, or are those part of the solar system mobile?

ETA: Ok, nevermind. I see from Spankum's post that it's a hood. Duh.

I just can't get over how a completely wild arse grown bird can sit on your hand.

Badass how you can tame such a wild creature.

Bet it was your wife who picked out the color to your kitchen. Women have no clue.

Yep, keeps them calm and still. Even with the hood, this one spazzes out some. But, she's brand new. Got a lot of taming and training to do.

I know you've discussed this before, but how in the cornbread frick do you take a completely wild arse predatory bird and put it to use?

It's pretty easy with a red tail. Wait til they're hungry enough to come to you for food. Start hunting. Pretty soon they realize that if they stick with you, game pops out and runs.

This is my first time with anything other than a red tail. Cooper's are notoriously difficult. It's the same general principle, but they're very high strung. I'll be learning as I go with her.

You should make a matching hood for yourself.

I just can't understand a wild animal that isn't doing everything it can do to either kill you or get away from you, but I've never fooled with birds.

Cool arse sport.

Awesome bird. I watched a Cooper's Hawk dispatch a dove in my backyard a few months ago.

I was studying at the patio table under the carport drinking a cup of coffee, and saw a dove land on my fence (tiny backyard, off Brightside).

Dove took off towards me and over the fence to my back. Heard a loud thump, and jumped up to see what the hell had happened. I looked through the latticework into the neighbors backyard, saw a cloud of feathers and the Cooper's hawk staring at me, and a dead arse dove in his talons.

*raises hand*

Does anyone else laugh a little whenever you see the "aTm" emblem on a vehicle.

My slightly depraved mind immediately thinks that they are "arse-to-mouth" supporters.
