He came by yesterday and "fessed up." It's a vinyl fence and the hole is about the size of a Quarter (maybe a little bigger). Not a big deal at all in my mind. He offered to pay for repairs. I wasn't upset at all, stuff happens. But then I thought, thank goodness nobody was back there.

He was testing a new release and it didn't get it set correctly. It fire prematurely.

Should I be more upset, or just thankful nobody got hurt and that he took responsibility for the damage?

I can't seem to get upset about it.

ETA: He hit 3 post on our other neighbors fence...

I shoot in my backyard, but I have a concrete wall as my fence to prevent this

I would not shoot against a vinyl fence

I would just reinforce with him to not shoot if anyone or any pet is in your backyard

But he seems like a terrible shot, so that would concern me

If he shot 3 posts in your other neighbor's fence he doesn't have any business shooting in the yard.

This would really piss me off and I wouldnt let it slide

Tell him you'd feel better if he had a backstop of more substance than the fence

I'd use the time to point him in the safest direction if he's going to shoot.

I may or may not have done this once when practicing extended holds at draw. Luckily arrow lost most energy passing through wood fence. My neighbor was cool about it though he thought my son did it at first before I fessed up. All was fine but I felt terrible about what could have happened (he’s rarely in back yard but his dogs are on occasion) and make sure to use a sufficient backstop (my neighbors shed right on the other side of the fence - he is cool with that too (lol)) at all times.

I would be concerned about the IQ of a neighbor who thinks a vinyl fence backstop was acceptable.

If it happened once who’s to say it can’t happen again with you or the wife being outside?

I wouldn’t be mad right now but I’d definitely tell him to shoot in other direction or get a large backstop.

I figured I should explain that, but got lazy and didn't.

He only had one stray arrow. He was shooting parallel to my other neighbors fence that they share. My fence is on a T-intersection with their two. The arrow deflected of my other neighbors fence like a rock skipping on a pond took out the multiple posts and then deflected off into mine.

It's was cold and vinyl is brittle.

He says it's the desert or a range from now on. I believed him.

Then I don't see the issue. Seems like he learned.

No harm no foul, I’m sure he learned his lesson and scared the crud outta him as to what coulda happened. Thats why he will take it to the range next time.

Ah, so more like a million to one shot.

Sounds like he's agreed to shoot elsewhere so it turned out good.

shooting with.alx 30 years ago. Had an arrow miss target, went thru the tiny gap in wood fence slats. Catapulted a little upward and went right by his backyard neighbor as he was in his yard. I shite myself a tiny bit. Neighbor was as calm as one could be in that situation! I apologized until I lost my voice.

If I had a dollar for every yip/lost arrow back in the day while practicing in the back yard….

Trying to learn to shoot a back-tension release will learn you a new definition of “the shot should surprise you” as well as watching $10 apiece ACC’s head towards parts unknown

To me it is just as dangerous as a gun and should be treated accordingly.

I’d ask that he put up a larger backstop behind the target so it prevents another arrow going through. Id tell him its not really about the fence damage but to prevent injury. That isn’t a rediculous request or one he should have an issue with
