Got a rancher 450 for my boy, he is 13 and it's been fun.

Both of my sons have grown up riding 4-wheelers and dirt bikes. I could let them ride my Honda Foreman 500 when they were 7-10 (under supervision).

I'm a short stocky guy, but I had a Recon 250 for about 5 years, when I had my duck lease. Made it through flooded rice fields, could ride three grown men on it with the back rack, and if I ever got it stuck, I could literally lift the back or front end and just move it over. I loved that little bike.
I'd suggest start with the 250, then when he's a little bigger and older, upgrade. If you take care of the 250, you won't have any trouble selling it on the used market later on down the road.

I have 3 sons who are now 28, 26, and 21. Here is my advice. I would get a 4 wheeler for yourself and tell him that you will let him ride it AND if he can take care of it and follow instructions then one day I'd get him his own. If you call it "yours" then he will be more likely to listen to you and you have a built in way to give him consequences WHEN, not if, he misuses it. Great teaching moments for kids that age. In 2.5 years he'll want to drive the car, build responsibility into him early.

Not applicable. The law you linked is for side by side UTVs ridden on the shoulder of public roads only.
