My father and his friend just got a lease near the town of Paducah, Tx in the panhandle. They are leasing the ranch to quail hunt but, we can shoot deer and turkeys as well.

The owner says there are good numbers of both whitetail and mulies. Has anyone of the board deer hunted in the general area and what were your experiences?

Would those be classified as Dessert Mule Deer?

Don't know about Paducah, Tx, but I don't think the Panhandle is desert. More of the plains I think. I've been to the Amarillo area and it's not a desert. Might as well be, there isn't a damn thing to do there.

Agreed, but its more desert than mountain? Wonder exactly what classifies as "desert mulie"?

We've been hunting 30 miles south of Paducah for about 15 years. Only recently have we started to see mule deer. We usually kill a couple of 140" bucks each year. A 150" maybe every 3 years.

Good numbers of turkey and quail right now on our place with the wet year we had. More hogs than you can shake a stick at.

How recent? 5-10 years?

Do ya'll specifically target mule deer?

You re a tad south but should see some mulies. We lease a ranch for turkeys only about 100 miles north of you west of Wellington and it has plenty and some good ones. Very poor country up there and has the worst climate on the planet. Two springs ago, the all time record high temp for April was topped and less than 24 hours later the record low was broken.....

Only about 5 years ago. We have not hunted them at all so far. Hoping for numbers to continue to rise. We actually had a mulie/white tail mix buck on camera this past year.

Imnpressive

There is a lot of ravines on the property with lots of cedar so, I'm think about just glassing those areas and see what I can find.

You may see Mule Deer but there is a different season and tags for them so watch it. We are in Crowell, Tx not far, if you go north about 50 miles they are plentiful. If the rancher says they are there I would believe him.

There was a 190+ Whitetail (I saw it in person) taken in Crowell a few years ago, this is all low fence free range.

There's some big deer around there, just not as many as south Texas.

Thanks for the info.

We're going to mostly be quail hunting but I'll be carrying a rifle just in case a big Mulie or whitetail shows up. I'll try to make some afternoon hunts for deer.

We leased a place for many years in matador. We killed a good many quality muleys. Whitetails were a bonus

That's awesome. Were you hunting in a stand or were doing Spot and Stalk?

Hunting with a rifle or a bow?

We had the place leased for quail. None of us had ever really mule deer hunted so we would sit in the stand for a little while in the morning then get out and spot and stalk. Probably only killed 1 or 2 out of a stand that I can remember.

Yeah seems like you have better odds with Spot and Stalk for the mulies.

Why do ya'll no longer have the lease?

When we got out which was about 6 years ago there wasn't a quail left on the place.

Yeah that's understandable. Seems like the quail have rebounded a good bit since then. That's why my father decided to get back out there.
