My opinion is to take a REAL class. There is safety factors involved. I have been on multiple cariudives and personally witness the dive master do very unsafe acts! So bite the bullet and take a local class at a dive shop that is certified. It is a wonderful hobby and really fun. But you need to be taught properly.

I agree. I "learned from friends and some guy in Puerto Rico. Then I had a regulator fail in Florida about 30 feet deep in St Andrews outlet. I semi panicked and was real happy to get out of there.

I sought out the best instructor in S Louisiana at the time (many years ago) and really learned how to recover from an event like that.

Take a real class!!

I learned during college from LSU football great, Ebert VanBuren. Our certification dives involved driving to Ft. Lauderdale, renting a sailboat, sailing to Bimini and doing 3 dives a day for a week. I was the only male student on the boat.
It.
Was.
Awesome.

He taught a SCUBA class at ULM at least up until the early 2000’s.

Him and his brothers grew up cleaning off ship hulls on an island off the coast of Belize. Not surprised they’re comfortable in the water. My mom lost touch with him when he moved to the states before her. She actually never got to meet Steve. He moved up here the year before she was born.

As far as the wetsuit...very few shallow water dives require it. And most novice dives are under 30 ft.

Springs in Florida panhandle are common OW checkout spot for South LA, water temp is around 65 degrees F. year round, its cold even with a wet suit.

You got that right. Once that water comes in thru the neck and down your back...it gets chilly...but once you acclimate to it, it's not bad. Did my OW at Vortex. That place is awesome. I was there for Memorial day weekend too...it was a zoo, but there was some nice eye candy for this ole man to look at.

Got certified in 1984 and we did check out there as well. I can still remember checking out the water to confirm wetsuit needed - yep!
