My son wants to use his grass cutting money to procure a shotgun. He’s been cutting all summer and I’m tickled that he has a goal and is actively working towards it. We keep looking at the new 870 youth 20ga. I’ve heard and read about QC issues with Remington. Would this gun be a good choice for him? My oldest has a Mossberg 500 so of course the younger wants something different. Looking to spend in the 300 range.
TIA

If you buy an 870 go get a used one, pre Freedom Group.

hate to say it, but his money is better spent with the Mossberg.

Bought an 870 two yrs ago for a project/4-wheeler gun. it rattled, rusted, failed to extract shells...all the typical complaints. I had to replace all the springs with mil-spec ($30), spray painted it black ($3.99), and replaced the extractor claw ($30) so it would be more reliable and not rust EVERY time I had it in the field. now, its a good knock-around drop-in-the-water gun for snakes and armadillos when I"m working on stands & blinds.

The $275 I dropped on it at academy was my monthly "impulse buy" money. If I had to work and save up over months as a kid to get it, I would be pissed

I would avoid new Remington. I had very bad experience with them few years ago. Their firearms are not what they used to be.

20 years ago I would have said absolutely get the 870.

What you are hearing about QC issues is accurate.

Goodluck.

I wouldn’t buy a current production Remington, buy an older wingmaster like mentioned before, best pump shotgun ever made

Go to pawn pawn shop and find a used a 870. Newer ones are shite but that doesn't mean ones a few years old aren't still awesome shotguns. You may however have to hunt around a bit for a 20, or get to know some employees and have them keep an eye out. In my experience 20 gauge 870's did not sit on the shelf for long at all.

And make sure it has a vent rib on the barrel, and if it’s a fixed choke barrel, get modified if he’s a duck/squirrel or an improved if he’s a dove/skeet killer

My mid-1990's 870 Express 12ga will not feed a shell after firing. I can rack it to get an initial shell in the chamber, but after firing it will eject the spent shell but WILL NOT cycle a new shell. It gets hung up coming out of the magazine and I have to release it by hand. I've tried oiling the area, polishing it, etc. and nothing helps. Thoughts?

They enjoy shooting skeet in the back yard and the occasional dove hunt. The kids do squirrel hunt a decent amount when they aren’t deer hunting.

I would also advise against buying a modern 870. I bought one and prefer my brothers H&R pardner pump which was $100 less.

look at the below replacement parts that I used, maybe that will help. Otherwise keep looking at where its hanging and maybe try LIGHTLY filing whatever is causing the hang up.

try this first magazine spring

then try this magazine follower

this fixed the failure to extract/load at the receiver receiver extractor

If he can make a like more money have him save a little more and get a Benelli Nova.

He should be able to get one for around $350.

Steer him towards a Winchester SPX. He'll love it

He’s only 8 so our grass is his only income. I’m gonna wait another few weeks and take him looking again. If he finds one I’ll make up the difference. I’m pleased that he is working towards a goal at such a young age.

That is pretty awesome. My little man is 12 now and has been mowing our yard for the 3 year now.

Still isn’t running the weed eater but that’s coming soon.

You will be much more pleased with the Benelli. Unfortunately Remington is now crap and has been for about 10 years.
