Buying a pontoon boat this weekend.

Has a new mercury 90hp command thrust on it.
3 year factory warranty.

Should I get the extended warranty for the motor? Don’t plan to use it hard, wot, all the time. Just for cruising.

TIA for any opinions.

I bought it but haven’t used it in almost 2 years. For the price I like the peace of mind. I keep up with the maintenance pretty well but after dropping 25k on my pontoon boat with that same exact motor it was an easy choice

We have great Mercury Product Protection extended warranty pricing. Most will never utilize it, but it definitely helps with your peace of mind and if you have any intentions of selling the boat in the near future. 8 years of total warranty available.

Email our office with your serial number for a quote if you would like. Thanks. david@davidwademarine.com

Extended warranties are basically financing a repair that might not even happen. They're almost universally a waste of money.

Not on a boat motor, especially in Louisiana.

OP, I would get all the warranty I could. It's not a matter of if but when.

Its financing a repair you are unlikely to need no matter how you look at it.

$600 warranty... $8,000 powerhead in my case. You do the math.

this. and even if something does break they will manipulate it to be some part not covered on the warranty

I am against extended warranties on everything...

except outboards..... given the normal lifespan of an outboard if you use it regularly at all it's money well spent.....and I'm a cheap-azz

That's a statistical outlier. Very very few people blow up outboards or even have any trouble with them before they have lots of age.

I don’t know I had a boat I just sold with 28 yr old
Evinrude. The motor when I sold it worked fine. Over the years I rebuilt the carbs, rebuilt the lower unit, changed the reed valves, and changed the power pack. The most expensive repair was the lower unit which the parts were around $1,000.

I also just sold a newer progator fiberglass bass boat with 250 hp evinrude etec. When I first bought the boat new the engine blew two heads. After that I rarely used the boat also rarely had problems. Thank goodness I did not have to replace the heads out of my pocket.

Cost of the outboards today, I would look into one on my engine if it did not come with atleast a 5yr warranty.

Outboards today have a lot more electronic components, and some manufacturers seem to continually change spec and/or suppliers for those components. Not all of this stuff is "torture tested" and much of this stuff doesn't have the track record of previous versions.

I bought my 250 mercury with 5 years of coverage. Compressor went out about three years after I bought it.

I think longer warranty on a "large" outboard is a pretty good investment (maybe not on a 9.9 or a 25). It's like a life insurance policy -- you don't really want to collect on it, but it's good to have.

On a mercury, I’d buy every piece of warranty I could.
