1997 mercury 25 hp 2 stroke firing on one cylinder only. Both coils are good.
I am thinking Stator or switch box.
Does anyone know if a bad stator will kill just one cylinder?

the flywheel has a magnet on it that passes a sensor and that fires the plug at the correct time. it could be that cylinder's sensor is bad or has a bad connection. its super rare a stator ever goes out but those pickup sensors do

they can use different styles of setups so im not sure if your flywheel has 2 magnets or one, but if it has 2 then you could have flung off a magnet for that cylinder.

being the age of your motor it might be like a lawn mower with a separate magneto coil for each cylinder

i know this very generic info is not much help, but thats what you need to look into

try watching this youtube video diagnosing a 1989 45 hp Mercury for no spark LINK

I pulled the flywheel. It has two magnets, a trigger, a stator, a switch box, and two coils.

Since you said both coils are good, I'm assuming you verified that it has fire on both cylinders?

Did you replace spark plugs?

I had an early 90s mariner 25 that I ran on 1 cylinder for way longer than I should have as a kid/teen. Turned out to be a power pack after my dad finally decided to take it in to get fixed. Fixed it and it ran like a champ again after. That motor was bullet proof.

I swapped the wires going to the coils and it changed which cylinder is firing. Still one cylinder no fire.

And yes, new plugs.

See link to CDI ingnition troubleshooting guide. The frequency of the AC voltages you’re measuring for, is higher than norm (60hz), so a regular volt meter won’t see it. You'll need a direct voltage adapter to use a regulator volt meter. That’s explained in the front of the guide. I bought a DVA online and was able to identify the trigger coil as my problem-2002 25merc. I had no fire on either cylinder though. I don’t know if you want to get that deep into it. But if you know your way around that sort of thing, the guide is helpful.

Check the resistance on your coils. It’s probably your cdi from what you are describing. Trigger coils are usually the first thing to go bad on these ignitions. Resistance on trigger coil is supposed to be 6500 to 8500 ohms. Look online for the Mercury shop manual.

Wanted to give an update on this. The switch box (CDI) was the problem.

I have the same motor...and the same problem.
Went off the Coast the other day and one cylinder was firing every now and then.
Still working on it so happy to see some troubleshooting here.
