Going to get this gun today. I plan on buying the 18.5" barrel and use it for HD and hunting when needed. What does the OB think about Maverick guns?

I have one for home defense with the 18.5" barrel. They are cheap shotguns, but good for the purpose of ending someone that breaks into your house. I've never had to "use" mine, but it never gave me any trouble when shooting it.

They're pretty good guns. A guy I worked with at Academy bought one, it came with a pistol grip. He said it shot pretty good but was harder to hold on to with just the pistol grip. He did say he was shooting it action movie style, down low by the hip.

Yeah, I replaced the standard stock with a collapsible one with pistol grip, but I definitely wouldn't shoot it with just the pistol grip.

Where did you get the collapsible stock?

Ebay maybe? It's been a couple of years so I don't remember for sure. There are a bunch of places online that sell them. Just Google Maverick 88 collapsible stock. A lot of the accessories that are compatible with the Mossberg 500 will fit the Maverick 88, but not all of them.....just do your homework.

I know they are practically the same, but I think they are made in Texas.

The Maverick line of shotguns are assembled in Eagle Pass, Texas using some foreign (Non-USA) manufactured parts, mainly from Mexico; which contributes to their relatively lower price in comparison to the Mossberg 500 series of shotguns which is assembled and manufactured in the USA.

you're right... it's the parts that come from Mexico. Eagle Pass is pretty much on the border...

red ring of death...just sayin

based on the current state of that country i'd rather not have anything that comes from there.

Def not saying the 88 is a bad gun though. The last HD shotgun I bought was an H&R Pardner. I looked at both and liked the H&R more. It's made in China so the whole "made in USA" thing is not an arguement I'm willing to make. I like my 870 but the H&R doesnt take a back seat to it in my opinion.

Here's the H&R...

I've been back and forth with the Maverick and the H&R... But I'm going with the Maverick long barrel and then I'm going to get the HD barrel. I heard it would be hard to find a field barrel for the H&R HD.

ETA: Made in Texas/Mexico>>> Made in China.

I have a Maverick 12 Gauge, 28" barrel with modified choke and an H&R 20 gauge youth with 20.5" barrel, interchangeable chokes.

I like the Maverick far more. It has always been a reliable gun. I have had it since the mid 90's.

The H&R out of the box had problems ejecting shells.

I think you're right about that. The barrel is the only part off an 870 that wont fit the H&R. I'm not sure about getting one from H&R.

ehhh... we can agree to disagree on that one. Texas, yes.. Mexico, hell no.

Mine doesnt seem to have this problem. That being said I've seen 870's have that problem too...

I just bought one but haven't shot it yet. Did some research tho and most of the forums say it is a good reliable shotgun. Maybe not as smooth as the 500 or 870, but no real problems. Academy guy said they have been selling them for 5-6 years with no problems.

I have a Mossberg 500 and it shoots good. It has been my duck, dove, rabbit, and squirrel gun for the last 5 years.

Mine came with a big arse "Made in America" sticker on it.
