I grew up in south Louisiana, but not in an immediate family that fished. I'd go with friends from time to time but never frequent enough for me to have my own gear. But I'm ready to get into it as a hobby. I am familiar with some things like using shrimp or minnows for bait and following the birds for specks, but my real questions lie with the appropriate gear.

I plan on fishing off land or pier into the gulf for specks, reds, drum, etc. Can anyone recommend quality reasonably priced rod and reel, with the appropriate hooks, line, sinkers, corks needed for this fishing? If any more info is needed, I'll provide. I appreciate it.

There are 100 "right" answers to your question. This is my personal preference. Figure out what you like and talk to others.

Equipment cost $120.00
Penn Pursuit II reel with 20 lb power pro braid
7' H20 Express Ethos Inshore Rod .

Tackle
3/0 Kahle Hooks
1/4 ounce , 1/2 ounce egg sinkers
Popping Corks
Swivels
40 Lb Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon Leader
Matrix Shad Shrimp Creole plastics
1/4 Ounce jigheads
Vudu Shrimp

Try fishing the road along route 1 in Fourchon/Grande Isle. There are many other posts about where to fish along the road. LA sportsman has an article this month as well.

If you decide you like fishing buy a kayak.

Voros hit it well but I think a 40lbs leader for the marsh is a bit much. I used 30 lbs for awhile but my knots were bigger than I like. 20 or 25 lbs works for me.

And if you're fishing the marsh, I like a 1/4 oz gold spoon. Redfish love it and it's very versatile with the number of ways you can fish it.

Do you use mono or braid for your main line?

I only do use a leader to hide my braid because I hear specks are line shy.

I use braid. 20 or 30 pound fins or power pro. they definitely aren't line shy. someone must have stock in leader material

I use red power pro. Specks are not line shy.

If this was Florida, okay. But it doesn't bother them here.

big trout can be and most definitely more often than not are line shy. Schoolies under popping corks...never seen it. I've seen it more times than I can count with bigger, older trout though. Especially jigging.

Not trying to debate it, but I'm just saying for the sake of confidence I would always use a leader if fishing braid.

That covers everything you need. I typically use 30lb leader. If you get outside of the marsh into some deeper water, you'll need 3/4oz egg sinkers or bank sinkers.

where are yall fishing with line shy trout?

beaches with live shrimp tight lined or in the bays, we regularly catch 22 to 24" fish and never had this problem. pow pow fished the platforms for those 7 pound ones and never did either. I've never experienced this phenomenon of line shy gator trout

40 is a bit big. I have a bunch left over from Mangrove fishing this summer so that is what I am using. 20-30 is fine. And yes to the gold spoon
