Map for Chandeleur Islands

Planning a trip and will be my second time going out to Chandy using the little skiffs without electronics (depth finder, GPS). The first trip was great and we caught plenty of fish but I didn’t love flying blind. Learned a lot and I’d love to carry that knowledge forward to this trip. Wanting to do some map study and bring a handheld GPS (or cell phone?) to mark guts, bars, grass flats, etc.
Have any of you done this or have any tips for using tools on the water to maximize the experience?
Edit: For those commenting on safety aspect, we'll be staying on a houseboat just off the island and using their "little skiffs". Not making the run to Chandy from MS or LA coast.

Define little skiffs, please. Doesn't sound like a good idea.

Staying at the Pelican and using one of their 15-16 ft skiffs.

Do you just want mapping? If trying to find depth etc it might be a lot trickier. If you can open Google Earth out there on your phone then drop a pin and take a screen shot.

I have a 24ft skeeter center console and got caught up in a wind storm 25 miles out on the way home from chandeleur. Was supposed to be perfect weather all day. I have permanent disk damage for the beating i received coming in.... It's a helluva run.

Guys. He's not making the run out there in a skiff.

I don’t have personal experience but you may be able to use a cell phone app without phone service? Someone may be able to chime in? You could also buy an old model handheld from 5-10 years ago for dirt cheap on eBay.

You can download navionics app on your cell. I don't think it had any location names or gut locations. You can zoom in and out which gives you a good idea of shore contour and has general depth for areas.
The crew out there is a good one. The chef just passed away. Salty ol Dog. Vietnam War Purple Heart.

I believe you can download offline google maps. Save some spots on the phone before you go, and add pins as u find what you like.

I did it years ago in a brand new never ran until that trip, 18 ft Duracraft with 90 Mariner, trying to break it in, drank some beer, and got a stupid idea.
Took 36 gallons of gas.
Used 36 gallons and was out 2 miles from Shell beach launch. Had to troll in. Got picked up by a shrimp boat who towed me in the rest of the way.
Never will do it again.
When I hit open water sober that will really set in how dangerous it is.
I was lucky it was May and no wind.
Those horse flies ate me up.
I crossed that open water never again in that small of boat.
Very stupid thing and if there was any wind I would have easily swamped my boat.
I been there in light chops in a 32 Scarab Sport. It is still puckering up in that boat, and that boat is designed for that.

Just remembered something huge to help you. Me and a buddy used this to find a spot I caught some reds at. Just take a picture of the spot with your phone. In the exif data of the phone you will find the gps coordinates and can apply them to a map later on.

That’s a good tip. Would have never thought about that

Garmin inreach and epirb if you are going to play the Darwinism game in a small skiff in big open water.

He's not taking a small skiff into open water. The skiffs are all towed out there with a larger boat for people on trips to use.
