Mangrove snapper hooks/line?

Going back to Fl. and fishing with a friend who has some good snapper spots. Seems the lighter your tackle, the better the bite. Using chopped small fish for bait. Got a hook rec? How light can I go on leader?

Also live pinfish for bigger mangroves.

this, I have even used 8# flouro
Throw a handfull of chunks then bury the hook and include it in the next batch, be sure to strip off enough line so the hooked chunk floats feely with the others.
If that fails chum them up to the boat and shoot them with a bow, way more fun.

I agree on the hooks, but 10# floro sounds like its on the small size. We use 25# around the rigs. Maybe 10# will work since your dont have a rig to get cut off on.

Worried about 10#. I want to say I used 12# last time and had two break me off.
When you guys say circle hooks, do you mean the true circle ones? Can y'all post pics?

That is always a danger but you will have exponentially more hook ups with the lighter line with the sharp eyed little bastards.
FYI circle hooks are required for all reef fish

Correct and non offset as well
As the OP mentioned FL here are the actual regs, not so sure I would comply with release of bycatch on a J-Hook though.

Here is what I use, i do like to go with a pretty light wired hook to allow the live bait to swim better. Since you are not using live bait, it may not be as big of a concern.

I think circle hooks suck for mangroves. I use the live bait J hooks from academy. Even though these have circle in the name they are not circle hooks.

For Mangrove I prefer a knocker rig with 3 oz glow weight and a 4/0 or 5/0 J hook

Red Octupus Hook for the win. Much better when using live croaker which is all we use.

I use 20lb flourocarbon leader, 40# braided line, egg sinker (size depends on depth and current) and 2/0 Owner circle hooks.
Works like a charm. You'll also be able to bring up very nice sized grouper if they happen to hit...and they usually do if you're on a good offshore snapper spot in Florida.
