Was thinking about buying a jumpstarting pack/device as a gift for someone. Are these devices reliable? What should I be looking for? Brands? Any recommendations in this subject appreciated. I see there are onboard chargers but am not familiar with these at all.

I keep one in my boat. I charge it before I go out each time. Never had to use it but one day I'm sure I will. Look for one with the most cca.

I use a 1700AMP Jump N Carry almost daily at work and it's wonderful. Think they're about $100.

Check this one out. I never would have believed it would work until I saw it with my own eyes. It is slightly bigger than a cell phone but holds a charge for 6 months. Watched it take a car battery that wouldn't turn on the radio and started it within 10 seconds (hooked up the cables and went to the ignition and it started without hesitation). They have one specifically for marine use.

I have used my trolling motor batteries to jump off my cranking battery. Any reason that's not an option for your friend?

Jump N Carry

This is the only brand you should look at. I have a JNC660 model which is more than enough for anything short of industrial use.

I always carry one of the Weego chargers that LSUCRNA mentioned in my truck. It gets used more often by us than with a normal user. It has saved several trips back to the shop due to a dead battery on a boat we are testing. We have used it to crank anything from a bateau with a 50 to a bay boat with a 350 outboard or even a big block MerCruiser. It's also compact and very convenient to carry in a blind bag to recharge a cell phone or even a GoPro with the USB plug.

this.

Unless they don't have a trolling motor. We always just use jumper cables to trolling motor battery.

this is the one you want. They were the original company to create these Lithium Ion jump starters. I have a bunch of friends who carry them in their souped up UTV's and put them through all kinds of hell and they stay working. Jumps off truck batteries too. 400 amp model. Also make one that's 600 amps for Diesels. LINK

Those Weego starters are 20% off today, there's a coupon code on the website. Got the "industrial" one shipped for a total of $151.99.
