1) Remington 20 ga 1100 youth model. Smaller, easier to handle, less recoil
2) 38 Special revolver with 4" barrel such as Taurus, Rossi, Charter Arms, Smith and Wesson. Easier to shoot than snubbies(2 in barrel), simple to use and relatively inexpensive ($300-400). With proper ammo is very effective
3)9 mm semi auto such as Glock 19 or S&W M&P. Very reliable, easy to disassemble and clean, reasonable cost ($500), cheap practice ammo, low recoil but effective with good self defense ammo
solid, but I'd go with a 12 ga 870 since I'm a man.
I have a .40 S&W on my night stand and an AK in a case under my bed for my home defense.

The judge. Shoots slugs or shot.
Or a benelli.

If you are wanting a home defense gun and are not planning to go go and hunt with it I seriously recommend an Interstate Arms 12 gauge. Yes they are modeled after the Remington 870, but for a lot less than you would pay. They shoot anything up to 3" which is all you will ever need. They are solid shotguns and set up semi-tactical out of the box.
IA DEFENDER
For a pistol I would get the Springfield XD 45. Solid, safe, straight shooting piece of equipment that I would be willing to stake my life on if the time ever came to use in a self defense scenario. You make a hit on an intruder, zombie, crack head, salt smoker and they will either die where they stand or fall and be out of action until the authorities arrive. I like them better than a glock 21 because you dont have to have Andre the Giants hands to hold it. They also come ready to add any "tacticool" accessories you may want to add with the rails.
XD 45
For a revolver I noticed someone linked the police trade-in 38 special from Buds. They are a good weapon especially for the price. However I do not like 6 shots and you are fumbling around to reload, especially when your adrenalin is flowing like Niagara Falls. Still a pretty good weapon but not near as much knockdown as the 45 ACP.
38 SPECIAL
Last but not least IMO is the AK-47 if you are looking for "zombie defense". Look no further. They are made in all types of configurations for a fraction of what you would pay for AR-15, with much more reliability. A $600 AK will outperform and outlast a $600 AR any day of the week. I like this one as a good starter. Although you can find them for cheaper if you hunt around. I tend to stay away from the WASR model but that is just preferential to me because they use cheaper parts in them.
AK-47
Above all get to a range or gun shop and hold, and test fire any and all guns you can. You will find one that speaks to you. These were just the ones I settled on after my own investigations. I apologize for linking Buds so often but they have great prices and a large library to shop from. As usual I am late for the thread as it has gone 3+ pages but I help where I can. Good luck.

Why I dislike Shotguns:
How do you hold a shotgun on someone and call the police at the same time?
It seems like a pistol would be easier to manipulate with one hand while calling/talking to police. I know a girl that actually held two dudes at gunpoint until the cops came. 357 revolver. She could stay on the phone and hold gun.
Shotguns, not loaded with slugs, are indescriminate weapons. Your spouse, child, and pet are possible collateral damage. I don't like the idea of not being able to place a round precisely where I want it.
A pump shotgun requires 2 hands to operate. The FBI had a mess on their hands in Miami when they were involved in a shootout and agents were getting shot. They found the pump action nearly impossible to manipulate when wounded. Unless you are Sarah Connor (think Terminator 2), you will have a hard time working the pump action with one arm.
The shotgun seems like it will not be good for tight spaces or just walking around corners or hallways...between the barrel and the stock...too long.
Why I like Shotguns:
Shotguns are game changers.
They have a variety of loads, from lethal to non-lethal and even fireballs to be used in different applications.
Shotguns have a broader kill/disable radius than a pistol round.
There is no mistaking a shotgun action. Racking a round into a shotgun is a fantastic deterent.
A shotgun is a fantastic weapon to use behind a closed door (if you have exhausted other options and someone is trying to break in).
IMO the best deterent is a dog weighing over 80 pounds (live inside). An outside dog can be poisoned too easily. I rarely see the dog lose on Cops...Also, the dog will know when someone is outside snooping around way before they actually enter the house. A barking dog is almost always enough to make a person think really hard about entering a home.
Just my thoughts...feel free to trash or discuss.

I keep a round in it. First sound you'll hear is the boom as your face gets blown off

My doorbell is the sound of a pump action.
Posted on 6/4/12 at 1:14 pm to Nodust
I'm getting a parrot and training him to imitate the sound. Also want him to say "break yo self fool!"

TigerTatorTots,
I vote w/ the shotgun crowd. The weapon documented to have the best chance of putting a quick end to an encounter is the 12 gauge shotgun; the 20 also does well and wound be a good consideration for recoil sensitive or smaller folks. You can buy a reliable pump shotgun w/o breaking the piggy bank. You don't need the newest, 20 round shotgun comlete w/ tactiacl stock, laser range finder, red dot sight, collapsible stock, flashlight, etc. I've bought 2 Mossberg youth model 20 gauge shotguns and have been pleased.
If looking instead for a handgun, I'd first recommend a revolver for a gun newbie. Go full size w/ steel frame. 357 Magnum is a top notch defensive round, but for a newbie the milder shooting 38 Special is probably better. The earlier suggestions for 38 Spec revolvers from Buds's is spot on.
If you're willing to put in the sufficient time to learn the more more complicated semi-auto, you'll have a plethora of options. 9 mm Luger, 357 Sig, 40 S&W and 45 ACP are all top notch defensive rounds. I'd look at striker fired guns like Glocks, S&W M&P's, Ruger SR's and Springfield XD;'s.

I wouldn't have to worry about trying to hold them and call the cops at the same time.
If someone breaks into my house, they have sealed their fate. I'll only call the cops after they're dead.

This is the case for a select few. Killing someone after you have the drop on them is not as worry free as just pulling a trigger and getting the mop....
I am addressing the majority of people that are not comfortable putting a gun in someone's face and burning powder. My scenario involves "catching" someone coming into a window or door and having an opportunity to detain them.
If they don't have anything other than a crowbar, some people are not going to be comfortable shooting them in the face. The DA may not be comfortable letting you walk if you shoot them in the back of the head crawling in or out of a window either...
On all the one handed shotgun operations: A grown man holding a shotgun with one hand is different than a 100# female holding a 12 gauge - while trying to dial 911 or hold it on a person.
bbvdd: I have caught an armed trespasser, and was lucky enough to call LE and hold him. I wasn't looking forward to shooting him at 5 feet if they did anything stupid. Looking back- I am glad I didn't blast the dude. But I had him dead to rights from behind and he gave up/surrendered.

I have a glock 9mm with extra mags and a
remington 870 12 gauge for sale. either would make an intruder regret their decision.

What generation is the glock? I am looking to buy a 9mm to cut down on range costs. Send email to twistedpigster@gmail if you want to discuss further.
