not a fan of products like CLP.

I've never used it.

I was reading a book about Mac v sog in Vietnam (we few - fantastic book) about not using "the issued CLP" on their weapons because it would gum up. I'll have to find it and see what exactly that dude said. I seem to remember wd40 and axle grease was what they liked.

I used to use rem oil but my poorly finished barrel would occasionally still get some rust spots. Started using CLP and haven’t had any more issues with rust.

Rem oil is good, it’s just not the greatest inhibitor.

I use brake cleaner/gun parts cleaner and the air compressor if something is really dirty.

My old machine shop teacher loved WD-40. He claimed it was the best bang for buck corrosion inhibitor. It makes shitty gun lubricant though unless you lay it on thick and drippy and it isnt too cold.

I've been soaking my boat gun with WD40 after each trip. Its a cheap blued .22 that rides in the leaning post and gets blasted with salt water very regularly. Looks like hell, but the wd40 seems to be good enough to keep it from rusting away.

A buddy put me on to motul chain lube. It's cheap. It doesn't move.

And it makes the absolute perfect carrier for a dusting of tungsten disulfide powder.

After a few hundred cycles of those two I run most guns basically dry. I lube them, wipe everything off with a paper towel, and that's it.

My only complaint is in semi auto shotguns I've seen them cycle faster than the shell can eject if not held extremely tight to your shoulder.

How can something clean off grease and then apply a lubricant at the same time?

Any oil will dissolve grease. CLP is a military product that does several things at once and saves logistical effort. CLP will clean, not as well as a pure solvent cleaner, will lubricate but maybe not as well as something with more EP additives, and will protect against corrosion but not as well as a dedicated corrosion inhibitor. In the military, our small arms can stay locked up for months at a time, CLP works well for a weapon where the oil can sit and work on crud for long periods of time. I leave a light coat of clp in tbe rifle bore, run a patch a month later, and it will come out dark from the carbon it's leached out of the metal pores while sitting.

Think the CLP used now was spec'd in the late 1980's or 1990's and it's pretty much all synthetic base oils with a EP additive.

I run a patch of solvent through all my barrels and run a bore snake through several times. Then clean out with dry patches. Then run a CLP patch through. Don't spend a ton of time doing it on my AR's and handguns. On my rifles, I actually spend time letting the bore solvent sit, then hit with a nylon bristle brush, then clean thoroughly. Followed by the same procedure with a copper solvent. Then run a CLP patch to protect once everything is as clean as I can get it.

I've not landed on a CLP product I'm married to. Have used Break Free, Breakthrough, Clenzoil, etc.. No complaints on any of them.
