Ran up on a rock quarry I wasnt aware of (no signs up) and need to order me prop shaft and propeller. Already ordered the shaft, just can’t figure out what to go back with. This is a little Yamaha 40 4stroke. It has a little SS one on it. I know it’s a 13 pitch.

Should I go back with SS or just get aluminum one? What should I look for if I wanted better hole shot, top speed, etc.

Thanks OB

SS (for durability) 4 blade for your hole shot.

I would always go SS.

Hard to answer without knowing how the old prop performed. You'll probably not get better hole shot and higher speed from the same prop.

Go stainless. Basscat techs claim that going down a size in prop gives you the same performance characteristics as going 4 blade... IDK, thought that was interesting. I am looking for a second prop, can't decide on what, some other guys are running the same boat/motor combo (not a basscat) and I am waiting on their results. I still am waiting on my GPS to get good numbers. Propping a boat is Voodoo to me.

Go with a stainless. If you hit something again it can be reworked. Aluminum are harder to fix.

I have a 3 blade and get a great hole shot. I have a lot of cup in my prop though.

My last time out I dinged it up, I need to take it off and knock them out.

As AlxTgr said -> SS.

Depending on how badly your old prop had been dinged prior to your collision, replacing it with the same diameter/pitch/manufacturer might give you unexpected improvements.

If there is a local shop or dealer who will loan you some props to test, I'd go that route before ordering a prop.

Definitely stainless
I know on my boat I was running a 21 pitch, getting a great hole shot and pretty good top speed. Bumped up to a 23 and still get great hole shot and picked up 5mph on the top end. I’m running a 115 Yamaha though.
I would imagine that the higher you pitch it, the more top end you’ll get but your hole shot will eventually suffer. If your boat gets up fast now, maybe order you a SS 14-15 pitch.
