If anyone would like to have some in person identification of most of the commonly found weeds in Southern lawns, you are welcome to come look at my yard.

Finally appeared we would escape the rain for a day yesterday so I broadly applied Weed-free Zone and spot treated with Roundup. Now we wait. I was hopeful the application of snow and ice to the lawn twice this winter would help but I'm seeing some new (unwelcome) visitors I've not seen in the past along with some old favorites. It's getting really close to a total rip and replace scenario. I hate having such a crappy lawn.

Is it too late for me to throw out a pre-emergent? I know it depends on soil temp. I went offshore one week with no weeds/dormant brown grass and came home to weeds popping up all over. Temps went from the 30s to upper 70s in a week it seems.

To late for crabgrass preemergent in centipede? I will be hitting it with weed free zone today or tomorrow.

Should still get some good action from crabgrass pre-emergent right now.

When should I feed and what should I feed with if I spray weeds now.

Kill the weeds but don’t fertilize until your yard is good and green. Both of my neighbors fertilized in early March last year and for a few weeks their grass looked like it was greening up nicely then we got a hard freeze about the 3rd week of March and their yards looked really bad for a few months. I’d wait to fertilize when you are pretty darn sure we are done with a freeze. I usually fertilize the first weekend in April and I live along I-10 across the bay from Mobile.

I concur on 15-0-15 for centipede or St. Aug. I use that time release Lesco and have had good luck with it. Others on here have mentioned they like Fertilome. I use the Lesco because the Home Depot down the road from my house carries it. Those higher end time release fertilizers cost more but in my opinion I get better results than the lower end fertilizers that wear off quickly. With centipede you only have to feed it twice a season.

Is it too early to throw down centipede seed? Home Depot had a sale on the Scott's brand. It was marked down 20 dollars. I have a few areas in my yard that I want to seed.

I would wait till Easter.
I laid a pallet of sod last Easter for an area I built up and the rest I needed seed.
Don't give up on the seed if it doesn't look good after a month.
Keep watering and pull any weeds and it will look great.
Don't let the weeds take over.

Also people in the south need to consider Celsius for weed control on bermuda,st Augustine and centipede.
Plus you can use it when temp exceeds 85 degrees.
Costs alot up front but lasts for ages.Started using it 3 years ago and still have half a bottle left.

How about for Emerald zoysia?

I have healthy zoysia and use roundup to kill anything green while it’s dormant. Works great and never hurts the zoysia come spring.

I would do two separate sprays. An application if Prodiamine on the entire lawn and an application of Blindside post-emergent on the weeds that are currently growing.

I sprayed yesterday. Mixed Top Shot herbicide with 2-4-D and sprayed my yard. The top shot will kill clover.

Had a terrible problem with my back yard being infested with dallis grass last year. It looks like crabgrass but makes those seeds that look like black pepper. I dug a good bit of it up but want to put down a preventative/preemegent. Is the Scotts Halts worth a damn or is there a more effective product out there?

Putting down some Amaze next weekend after this week’s thunderstorms are over to get out in front of the spring/summer weeds

The Top Shot I linked above will kill Dallis grass and won’t hurt you grass if you are spraying when it’s below 80 deg.

The best preemergent will depend on your turf grass as well as the time of year you spray.

Here is my schedule for St Aug grass:

February - Prodiamine 65 WGD (brand name Barricade)

End of March / Early April - Pennant Magnum

June - Dithiopyr 40 WSB (brand name Dimension)

Fall - 2nd app of Prodiamine.

That’s a heavy price tag for different preemergents, but If you just use one you may end up going above the annual maximin and you also get different covereage for different problem grasses and broadleaf weeds. Each one has lasted me multiple years though. Then if you hit the weeds early spring/end of winter (ie right now) and fertilize the shite out of it you are going to really have nice looking lawn for the year and it will come back even stronger next year.

But if I had to choose one, I’d do two blanket applications of Prodiamine (spring/fall) just don’t forget the fall application. That sets up the groundwork for having a strong lawn next spring.
