The intended purpose is for very simple tasks, such as at a shooting range or visiting a Civil War battlefield with a desire to know the range of various terrain features like a hill or a tree.
I don't need the very best and most expensive model.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Cabela’s makes a pretty decent affordable range finder

There was a thread here couple years ago and everyone was saying the Sig ones are good value for money. I got one based on that and have been pleased.

Vortex 1400HD.
Best budget Rangefinder around. On sale right now for about $170 at Focus camera and Europitic.
1400yd range (actually about 900-1000 for trees landmarks, etc that don't shine).
You can usually catch them for about $150 around Christmas/black Friday.
Stay away from Amazon special $50-$70 teng funders. They're POS's and will break after 6 mo of light use.

I’ve been happy with my Leupold. You can usually find them on sale.

Sig
Not really fair for you to use since the Civil War soldiers had to eyeball it.

Bought my son an Sig. It’s been a good range finder for him.
I have a Leica. It’s awesome and would highly recommend it but it is on the pricier side.

Any of the cheapest from the big names will work for what your asking for (bushnell, leupold, vortex, sig)
For very rough estimate plus or minus 5-10yd on areas that are open just download one of the apps
(HuntStand, ONx) and you can pull a measurement fairly quick if you have service and not pressed for time as in less than 30sec
