Best? Or biggest?

Biggest would probably be Lacassine.

Best would probably be Gross Savagne.

Kind of a spin-off. What happened to cataouatchie? That place was all the rage a few years back and then went silent.

Public areas only:
for numbers, I’d say Venice
for size, Lacassine

If I remember right, there was a MS river diversion that was pumping all kinds of fresh water into it making the fishing great. But it was dropping salinity levels further south and oyster fisherman complained loud enough to get it slowed.

Someone else can correct me if I’m wrong. My brother and I had quite a few awesome trips over there years ago.

on cataouchie no body really knows to be honest. I think its a culmination of a bunch of factors.

Some say too much spraying, some say the diversion makes the soil not capable of sustaining growth.

but i never seen a place get so quickly destroyed by fisherman before. It was a free for all.

From what I heard the loss of vegetation was the number one thing that killed Cataotche especially the Tank Ponds

Yes, the disappearing vegetation was a big part of the problem. The cause was in dispute. A bunch of the locals claimed that slowing down the diversion caused salinity levels to rise killing off the vegetation. Others said it was from excessive sedimentation from the diversion.

I don’t claim to know what it was. Just vaguely remember all the theories I’ve heard.

Didn’t LDWF stock it with Florida strain bass, too? What a waste.

The diversion flow being cut back and made seasonal was the major factor, Davis Pond is not a sediment diversion though it has built some land. The Florida-strain stocking is what got KVD that big bag record but was just icing on the cake of the river water making it an awesome fishery, which it still would be today had oystermen not bitched and lobbied to have it scaled back. This is why we can’t have nice things.

"Private" Marshes around Bayou black, just make sure your boat is faster than an airboat.

Anyone have any information about Sweet Lake right near Grosse Savanne? Or Willow Lake near there? Lake Misere? Grand Lake? Public? Brackish water? Any fish to be had there? I need to find a place to past time time not far from home for when Lacassine is closed.

Pillage, it may be time to revive the Lafayette Fishing thread.
