Heading down in 1.5 weeks for my third trip to this bass haven. Caught my personal best(9.6) down there several years ago on my first trip. Our second trip I didn't catch one over 5 due to the high lake level and warm water, but we still caught 100/150 a day.

Both trips we've gone on there was an 11 lb fish caught. Hoping I can reach double digits.

Any of you peeps ever fished El Salto? Got any stories to tell?

Been two times. Last time was several years ago too. Caught an 11.6 and a 10.5 the last trip. Also caught a couple of 8s. One of the guys that went with us caught a 12.7. All four of us caught at least one over 8. Lost count of the 7 pounders. Used mainly white super flukes dipped in garlic chartreuse dip not weighted. Went both times in February March in the middle of their first spawn and a full moon. Had a blast.

I went once a couple of years back, it was good but not great that weekend.

It was December.

I'd go back

Sounds like my first trip there. I caught several 6s and 7s with a couple 8s and the one 9.6.

They should be in pre spawn mode. Hopefully they are ready to eat. Monsoon season has come and gone, and the lake is at a normal pool for this time of year. Couple that with the cooler nights, the bait fish should be moving shallower.

My big ones came on a 10" worm that year.

I'll be working a senko and slow sinking swimbait in the AM, and switch to a worm and deep diving crankbait in the PM.

Anglers Inn already landed a 10lb a couple weeks ago with some 6-9 lb bass mixed in.

Yea, with any lake timing is everything. But what's unique to El Salto is that you will still catch a lot of fish, maybe not the size you want, but its still a blast.

It was high the first time we went but still caught a lot of fish but only 2 over 8. Did a lot of deep fishing with worms and swim baits. The last time it was low and it was unbelievable. We would catch 100 fish per boat each time we went in the morning and afternoon.

Are these guided trips, or do they rent you a boat and send you out?

What does something like this cost?

There are local Mexican guides that take you.

The two main outfitters are RonSpeed Adventures and Anglers Inn. RonSpeed is the more affordable route, but from what I've seen from Anglers Inn they have better amenities.

I'm down there to fish so I really dont care how nice it is

Ron Speed is $1300 per angler for 3 days fishing in October thru December/ $1600 January thru March/ $1300 April thru July

Anglers inn will probably run you a few hundred more for the same amount of days.

After that money you need to add on is airfare, tips, and one nights stay in a resort in Mazatlan the night before you leave. Plus you should bring your own tackle if you are a decent angler. They can provide it, but its best to bring your own.

You could make a good trip for $2,300 or so per person total.

But it's hands down the best trip for any avid bass fisherman. It's just heaven for fishing.

I’ve been once and was a blast. No monsters for me but the group did catch some 10s. Same group went week before thanksgiving this year instead of the week after as normal. It was the first horrible trip I’ve ever heard of and they been going for @20 years. Guess they should have gone on there normal week. I would go back in a second.
Best story I have is catching 7-8pounders in an hour off a bridge in 20- 25’ water. Was fishing 8 pound fluorocarbon on big bills and burning to get it down. It would hit the bridge and I figured by the yellow line in middle of road BAM another one. It was awesome. I remember I was wore out from burning it so fast to hit the bridge and was done in an hour. I turned around to my dad and said you ready, he gave me that look of hell no but said “I’ll take another beer this is vacation not work.” Mission accomplished. That was 15 years ago.

Haha. One thing for certain is your ribs will be sore from setting the hook so many times. I set the butt of my rod on my left rib cage to set the hook. Rubs that fella raw. But I normally have a few coronas/pacificos running thru my blood so it's not too bad.

I'll report back after the trip and let y'all know how it went. Hoping for a 10+

Eventually I'll visit lake Commedero. That lake is THE spot for potentially catching a 10+ at this moment. I read somewhere that a group that was visiting caught like 50 plus 10 lb + bass.

Use to go with a group from California 3 to 4 times a year for 15 yrs. We never been disappointed in the hospitality along with the quality of fishing.

The first year we went we had to get Mexican vehicle and boat insurance. After the gas, extra insurance, time spent trying to find fish and other little fees in Mexico it is cheaper to get a lodging/ guide package.

Funniest time was when I had a bottom line side finder. I said there was no fish in this spot. My friend said are you sure and I said yes. A few seconds later he boated an 11 lb bass in the boat.

Do any of y’all fishing Mexico worry about losing your heads down there? Fished gurrreoro twice, flew in once and drive once but no way I would do that now.

Bass spawn is usually February through March

You can go before and catch the pre spawn toads, or go in the summer when the lake is low and catch post spawn. I've never gone post spawn, but it seems they catch a lot of fish from what I've heard.

I would upload my 9.6 but I have no idea where it ended up.

Was on my old Facebook, but I deleted that many years ago.

It's kind of frustrating. It's a funny picture too. My guide Armando Sr. had a Marijuana hat on right next to me holding that giant.

We don't eat the trophy's. We put them back so somebody else can catch the fish of a lifetime.

Not going to lie it crossed my mind when I was younger. But they haven't had an incident in 30 years of service so it's not something I worry about.

Best fishing use to be spring.
We went twice in the spring and twice in the fall.

Things in Mexico are a lot worse than 80’s and 90’s. They use to give you BS tickets which you paid no big deal pay it and move on. Now they raised the game in some areas taking you hostage and someone paying your ransom.

Just easier to fly and have the lodge arrange everything.

We shipped our tackle down a week or so before we went. Use to be cheap from Southern California.
