Planning a trip for my daughter and I to fish there next year. Anyone have any experience fishing in that area. Outfitter recommendations, Best time of year to go, etc. I'm open to other lakes. El Salto seems to get a lot of good press and that is why I'm looking there. Thanks

No recs but that area is Hot so keep head on swivel. Tourists aren’t targeted but can be collateral.

Its a great place, everyone I know has good things to say about it. Most of them don't go there any more because of the cartel situation.

I have been to El salto twice and picachos three times, all with Ron speed. Picachos is a whole lot closer to Mazatlan than Salto if you are worried about traveling dangers. We never had any problems. You go straight from the airport to the lake, stay at the housing at the lake, then go straight back to Mazatlan. I'm sure that you could get into something stupid if you ventured outside the parameters of the camp area alone. But there's no reason to. Everything you need is in the camp. The food was amazing. Best salsa I have ever had.

The outfitters and the cartel seem to have a working relationship although it was never spelled out to me. The van has a big "tourista" on the top of the front windshield.

It is a memory making trip for sure

I have been to both. El Salto for size and Pichachos for quantity. El SAlto is further and closer to the cartel territory. We never had any trouble on our trips but that was before the US designated them a terror organization. Ron Speed was good and the word was they have an arrangement with the locals for safe passage. As far as the fishing Lake P is a great place to learn new techniques as the fish are stupid and eat most baits readily. El Salto has some giants if that is what you want.

This is very true. Fishing there will make you feel like you are an expert Then you come back home and feel completely stupid again. The most that we caught in one day was 250. We would have 2 rods with the same bait. Cast, get bit, reel in, hand to guide to unhook, pick up other rod, cast, get bit, etc. I think our biggest was around 6 but it is ridiculous how many fish are in that lake. It is definitely a trip that is worth taking.

This is a trip on my bucket list and I would NOT take my daughter there right now. 95% chance it would be totally fine but the things Ive heard about how quickly things can get violent internally in these cartels makes that 5% possibility a no go for me.
